  • Sit yourself inside the Cayman, and you'll find that this is one sports car that is easy to get comfortable in. It may be low slung, but the seats are comfortable and visibility all round is excellent. Materials used in the cabin are of high quality - what else would you expect from the Germans. That being said, the Boxster S we have in our company stable is starting to show signs or wear, even the plastic areas we hardly come into contact with are beginning to scratch off. No chance of a long term test with this Cayman though, so we wouldn't know how it's interior will stand the test of time.

So Good It Hurts | Porsche Cayman 2.7 PDK

The new Porsche Cayman is seriously good. In fact, it's definitely the best drive I've had this year so far. So why am I still missing the previous one?

    • The sitting position is great too, and the new steering wheel is nicely sized. I did wish it had the sports steering wheel with the paddle-shifters though. This one is a bit confusing - if you're used to pulling left to downshift and pulling right to upshift (like the sport wheel does), the buttons on this wheel might throw you off a bit, as they don't do that. Instead, you push either one down to downshift, and pull the ones behind to upshift. I find it odd how one company has two methods to do the same thing. Anyway, the PDK is still an awesome gearbox. Phenomenally quick and robust with every gear change, it's one of the nice things about the Cayman. Although I really wouldn't mind trying a manual 'box too.
    • Which brings me to the bit about sports cars and technology. Sure, the automotive world has benefitted in a huge way because of technology. Cars are faster, more efficient and more effective now because of advancement in technology. But how far is too far? The electrically assisted steering in the new Cayman is once such example. Other journalists who have had the opportunity to drive the Cayman earlier have claimed that it offers the best of both worlds. Analogue meets electric - and they both hit it off. I beg to differ. It still feels fake and simulated. I reckon its because nothing can replace real feedback. Duh!
  • As before, two engine options will be available, with a choice of 6-speed manual or 7-speed PDK gearboxes. The base Cayman has a 2.7-litre flat 6 with 275 bhp, while the S shares its 3.4-litre engine with the 991 Carrera, albeit in a different state of tune, producing 325 bhp. Thanks to stop-start and direct injection, Porsche claims a 15% improvement in fuel efficiency, bringing the figures to 7.9km/l and 8.4km/l for the base and S models.

    • Depending on engine and options, the new car is up to 30kg lighter, despite growing in length and width, and putting on larger wheels. The longer wheelbase and wider track should improve the car’s agility, as well as giving it better composure when tackling bumpy roads.
    • With the 911 moving upmarket, the Cayman has had room for more luxuries. Adaptive cruise control is an option for the first time, maintaining the distance to traffic in front, as is Porsche Torque Vectoring and electromechanical power steering.

    • The Porsche 918 Spyder combines high-tech racing features with electric-mobility to offer a fascinating range of qualities; the car is a mid-engined sports plug-in hybrid. Power comes from a 4.6 litre V8 engine, making 580 bhp. The ‘electric-mobility’ refers to the two electric motors that accompany the V8 and power each axle, making an extra 211 bhp. The exterior design is said to be inspired by Porsche’s Intelligent Performance philosophy with advanced motorsports technology. That, combined with a clean, functional shape, makes the car a pleasingly modern design, which makes a bold statement everywhere you choose to drive it.
    • If you decide that the power-to-weight ratio of the standard car is not good enough, or want to regularly take the car on trackdays, you could opt for an upgrade, which comes in the form of the Weissach Package, which trims the body work in carbon fibre, adds hollow-spoked magnesium wheels, aerodynamic tweaks and flame-resistant upholstery, to shave off nearly 37 kg off the curb weight.

    • The body is fashioned entirely from carbonfibre, underpinned by an all-aluminium monocoque chassis. Such extensive use of lightweight materials allows the 4347 mm long car to achieve a kerbweight of 1400 kg, which is comparable to the Porsche 911 Carrera S PDK’s 394 bhp and 1415 kg.

The resulting “NUR-Spec” design incorporates a more warp resistant casing and additional nylon-reinforced cover ply to increase high-speed stability. This construction is complemented by a rounder tyre shoulder, optimising pressure deployment on the tread area.
    • In contrast to the previous FK452, dry handling has been improved by 25 percent whilst handling on wet surfaces is enhanced by 30 percent, delivering useful gains in control for lane changes and higher speed cornering. A combination of tread pattern and compound changes has led to an eight percent reduction over the FK452 in braking distances on wet surfaces. To break the water film and deflect the water more effectively than conventional tread patterns, Falken has implemented three central tread grooves and staggered sipes integrated into the first tread bar on the tyre shoulder. In line with its other new products such as the ZE914, Falken has increased the silica proportion. The strain characteristics of silica offer a larger contact area and better grip for the same tyre diameter, resulting in stronger interaction with the road surface.
    • To achieve the lower noise levels now expected by consumers, even those running low profile tyres, Falken introduced phase-shifted tread bars. The rounder shoulder contributes to the significantly lower rolling and pass-by noise. The new Azenis FK453 range will comprise 62 different sizes (25 to 50 series), making it applicable for a significant number of cars.

    • The Gran Turismo Sport - or GTS for short - model name says it all: the new Panamera GTS is the purist member of Porsche’s Gran Turismo family. A chassis designed to be particularly dynamic and agile, a more powerful engine with even more intense feedback and an interior and exterior that send a clear sporty statement make the Panamera GTS the four-door sports car for fast roads of every description.
    • The power unit in the new Panamera GTS is a modified 4.8-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine, delivering 430 hp at 6,700 rpm, trumping the engine in its Panamera S/4S sister models by 30 hp. The maximum torque also increased by comparison, from 500 Nm to 520 Nm. The way in which at the push of a button the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmits the engine output to the all-wheel drive (PTM) – thanks to the Sport Chrono package featured as standard without interruption to the power flow – is especially dynamic.

The car will not attract its targeted audience: those who enjoy driving and feel connected with the car BUT at the same time, one that’s not too flashy nor too loud. The sort who already past the BMW or Mercedes-Benz phase and looking for something one step up in their (motoring) life.
    • Kind of predictable, really, but now that I’ve driven it, the new Porsche 911 (in Carrera S guise here) definitely reminds me of the ultimate expression of Porsche’s ethic; it is the highest point, if you like, on a graph which measures driver involvement next to performance.
  • The all-new, lightweight body of the Porsche 911 Carrera is an intelligent aluminium-steel composite construction. It is responsible for a significant proportion of the weight reduction of up to 45 kilograms. Combined with significantly greater rigidity, aerodynamic optimisation – including a wider, variably extending rear spoiler – enabled the new 911 Carrera’s lift to be reduced yet further while retaining a very good Cd value.

    • Also on display were all generations of the 911, including one model of the iconic first 911 generation. On this momentous occasion, Porsche also launched Porsche Financial Services in Singapore - a first in the Porsche Asia Pacific region - introducing two Financing products.
    • “The 911 is the epitome of the Porsche brand and has contributed significantly to the growth of Porsche in Singapore. Porsche has grown so much in Singapore and we have successfully achieved another record sales of 472 in 2011. It is going to be another exciting year in 2012 especially with the introduction of the new 911 and also the new Boxster and Boxster S - we are confident that our sales in the sports-car segment will increase further,” said Karsono Kwee, Executive Chairman Stuttgart Auto.
  • Where do you think Porsche got its money from before this? 911 Turbos? Boxsters? Nah. Well, those did contribute to Porsche’s pay cheque, but the one model that turned its financial luck around was the (cue drum roll) Cayenne – the big, luxury SUV that thinks like a sports car. How was that achieved over two successful generations? Let’s just put it this way: Moneyed drivers always like their SUVs large, comfy and with a badge they can all brag about (“Yes George, my SUV is that new one from Porsche. Have you seen it yet? Sure beats your Lex”).

Forward Thinking | Porsche Panamera S Hybrid

It may not be the first hybrid luxury car, but in the case of the Panamera, it makes so much sense to dream of one - skeptical Panamera naysayers ought to think twice now

    • So if a luxury SUV model makes money, it also makes sense to build a luxury sedan (or pseudo-coupe, if you will). Two years ago when the Panamera was introduced to the masses, it stirred some emotions; Porsche purists got a mild heart attack, aspiring young fans spewed profanities and its fellow German countrymen seem interested to know how this product will make it in (automotive) life. Some even called it an “S-Class with the beak of a Corvette and arse of a 911”. Whatever it was, the only happy people are high-flying company bosses – for once, it justifies the purchase of a company Porsche at the financial year-end’s audit.
    • You may passionately dislike the Panamera and its existence, but let’s face the reality here: Porsche needs a product like this to stay alive and produce more awesome models. Here’s a layman explanation: With a four-door luxury saloon as this to compete with the likes of the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8, the brand automatically reaches a far wider appeal, sales will turn positive, profits increase, and more money can be invested for production of high performing Caymans and 911s.
