The Dogfights The Belgian started at row one for the first sprint together with fellow Belgian and Comtoyou Team Audi Sport driver Frédéric Vervisch, and stayed up ahead of his teammate in a 1-2 formation despite the safety car being deployed at one point. A hard attack on the last lap dropped Vervisch back to fourth, but Magnus kept his cool and collected the chequered flag with a 2.1-second lead, thereby also winning the Trophy classification for privateers – an early birthday present for the soon-to-be 22-year old. The second sprint saw Vervisch brilliantly fighting his way from ninth on start to second at the chequered flag, and setting the fastest lap time in the process, bringing home another trophy for Audi Sport customer racing. The Car Impressively, the 340hp Audi RS3 LMS gen II has racked up five podium places in the FIA WTCR. Once price and specifications have been finalized, customers’ can expect their cars in the third quarter of 2021. This touring car has been homologated for TCR racing, and combines cost-effective technology – from top-notch cockpit ergonomics to deeply configurable axle kinematics – while being customer-racing centric, with durable service lifespans of major components. This enables the Audi RS3 LMS gen II to race in about 30 licensed racing series globally as a worthy successor to the highly successful RS3 LMS that came before it.

2002 NISSAN SKYLINE GT-R (R34) V-SPEC II NÜR (10KM) Given the skyrocketing values of JDM icons, the crown jewel of the collection is unsurprisingly that white Skyline GT-R. The current auction record for an R34 Skyline is 33.2 million yen (US$314k/S$426k) for a 6817km Millennium Jade M-Spec Nür, but this BH Auction car will probably smash that. For comparison, that’s slightly more than the base price of a McLaren 720S in the US - just let that sink in for a moment... The reason for the astronomical price? Well for starters, it's a V-Spec II Nür, the penultimate iteration of the R34 that commemorated the end of Skyline GT-R production (the 19 mighty Z-Tunes were converted by Nismo in 2005 from existing cars). Named after that famous racetrack in Germany, 718 V-Spec II Nür were produced (159 - the most common colour - in white), and received all of Nissan’s go-faster bits that were available to the Skyline at the time.

The weight of the NSX project laid mostly on your shoulders. What are the three things that inspired you while engineering this car?Certainly I’m the large project leader, but the nice thing about working on this project is that I work with a group of passionate people around me. So I think the ‘weight’ is nicely distributed, giving me confidence everyday.The three things that inspired me? Well, I think people tend to look at the NSX as ‘just a product’; but actually it’s a concept created by Honda, the brand’s pinnacle sports car at that. I met the original team behind the original NSX, and that meeting alone inspired me to recreate the core essence of the NSX — we needed to bring that back, along with new technology. The second thing that inspired me was meeting certain people within the organization; without the need for any proof, they just jumped into this crazy project, with brand new technologies, and sticking to the timeline. It’s just inspiring to see these people take up that challenge.Lastly it’s meeting the NSX owners group and observing how passionate they are. They’re a diverse bunch — at the same time, very open-minded, encouraging us to make something new and world-class.

BP — What cars do you guys own? JML — I have a VW Passat biturbo. MA — I actually have the same. JML We both also have VW Golf GTIs; mine is a 1980 and Miikka’s is a 1983. MA — And I also have a ’92 Polo G40, which is a very rare car in Finland, and a Mercedes 190SL from 1963. JML — In my collection I have a MkII Ford Escort BDA, I have an Audi ur-Quattro road car, Quattro Group 4 rally car, Quattro A2 Group B rally car, and then an Audi Coupe Quattro. Then I have a ’99 Toyota Corolla WRC car (which we were using back when we were privateers in Finland, but now it’s been completely restored), and then a Sunbeam Avenger (which was the first rally car I ever got), an AE86 Corolla Levin (which I was running when I was 16 years old), and my father has a Ford Escort RS BDA and two Mitsubishis, a Group A Lancer Evo III from 1996, and a Lancer WRC 2002. The Golf GTI and ur-Quattro are completely road cars, in original condition, but the rally cars all have some sort of history, and that’s what’s important to me.

BP — Would you be as effective with another driver or is there a sort of chemistry between you guys? MA — I think it depends mostly on how well you can cope with the system of a particular driver, because normally every driver has his own preference and the co-driver must adapt himself and understand what the driver needs. There are several co-drivers who have been successful with several different drivers, so I think that one driver can be successful with many co-drivers, but for a co-driver to be successful he needs a very talented driver. BP — Jari-Matti, has there ever been a case where you found yourself expecting more of Miikka? JML — No, not really. Its only been a few times where if Miikka has been a little bit late or going a little too early then I will just tell him to wait a moment, or just telling him ”next note, next note

BP — The previous 3 generations of MX-5 had a design that was quite cute, rounded and smiley, which clearly evolved over the years. Why then did the ND's styling suddenly change to something quite aggressive and angry? Nakayama — Of course, compared to the previous generations, the design is more aggressive, but I personally believe the most important thing is not how it compares to the older cars. When you look at the car without prior knowledge about the previous models, whether it is beautiful or aggressive or not, is not the most important thing. I believe that when we introduced the first-generation model, among all the players in the industry, car design had certain tendencies. So maybe every player had a much more pretty or softer face. But now, so many players have a much more aggressive face and complex design. So I think that compared to the other players today, the design is not that aggressive.

Handling wise, the Golf R is pinpoint sharp and definitely feels one notch higher than the GTI. Thanks to the 4Motion four-wheel drive system, ever alert traction control and XDS cross differential lock, you can enter tight corners at speed and also flick the car into a turn without worrying about any understeer. In fact, you might even feel the rear about to throw itself into a drift but like magic, the car will just correct itself. That said, body-roll is still obvious; it’s not the sort that throws you off, but the type that adds more sensation into your drive. If you want something that is more focused on all out grip and controlled body movements, then you might want to look at Renault’s Megane RS instead…
