Total solar eclipses have long been events rich with stories from oral traditions behind them. From a dragon or snake in the sky eating the Sun to angry quarrelling Gods inflicting damage on each other, the occasion where Sol is fully obscured by Luna leaving a ring of fire visible to those in the umbra is certainly an experience of a lifetime. And so, Rolls-Royce has drawn inspiration from the spectacle, mystery and drama of a total solar eclipse to herald the coming of the equally rare Black Badge Ghost Ekleipsis Private Collection. Limited to just 25 units worldwide, the launch of these highly bespoke vehicles coincided with the annular solar eclipse that was visible in parts of the Western Hemisphere on 14 October.

The relevant dictionary definition of ‘Spectre’, as applied in context to Rolls-Royce, is “a ghost.” Fitting, since Rollers past have been named after other-worldly entities such as Phantom, Ghost, Wraith, Spirit, Seraph and Shadow. However, one cannot help but to think of the other definition, “something widely feared as a possible unpleasant or dangerous occurrence”, which could also be apropos given the current global geopolitical situation in late-2022. One then has to wonder if Rolls-Royce has a morbidly-ironic sense of humor when they named their latest car, or if it is just mere coincidence. Someone who wasn’t thinking of the latter definition, surely, was Charles Rolls, whose name forms one-half of Rolls-Royce. In 1900, Charles acquired The Columbia Electric Carriage, and the (possible) futurist in him foresaw electric vehicles (EVs) as clean, noiseless alternatives to the internal combustion engine. 120 years later, his prophecy has been fulfilled by Rolls-Royce’s first-ever EV, the Spectre.

Some of the interesting facts and figures shared by him include, how at the end of 2010, the Rolls-Royce brand saw a whooping 400% growth here in Singapore. The sustainable growth was largely due to the effort put in by automobile businessman Karsono Kwee’s Eurokars Group, which is investing seriously in expansion programs. The Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ growth did not end just there, as it saw a healthy 600% growth in China. Surprisingly though, the European market could not catch up with the Asian market — at the end of 2010, it only saw a 200% growth. Although uncertain and “hard to predict”, Mr Muller-Otvos reckons that China will overtake North America as their main consumer, by as early as the end of 2012. He also stated that the latest Ghost model would help drive that new growth.
