  • Well that engine is, along with the rest of the lineup, being phased out to make way for Audi’s potent supercharged 3.0 TFSI. But rather than the performance-tuned 333 bhp you'll find in say the S4, the Q5 has 272 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. Paired with Audi’s 8-speed Tiptronic transmission, it is the same quick-shifting unit you'll find on top tier Audi sedans. We would have loved for it to be mated to the S-tronic though, because the Q5 is a rather nifty handling SUV, and with all that power, it makes for a rather sporty drive.

    • The hybrid sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 km/h. Standard fuel consumption is less than 6.2 liters per 100 km, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of less than 145 gm/km.

This technology keeps the battery within the suitable temperature window over a broad range, ensuring a relatively large proportion of electric driving.

    • The Forester's current position in the soft-roader market puts it really close to the small SUV category. You can't really blame it – the chunky wheels and door handles, big mirrors as well as puffed-up wheel arches lend themselves to create a “bigger” look. The minor surgery for this year honestly feels lacking, but stuff like these are created to last for years, not just for a season. Fair enough.
    • After you have yanked on those manly door handles, you'll be greeted with … the same interior. The storage areas in the doors and centre console are so generous, it will make it easy to forget where you left your smaller stuff (eg: a bunch of keys, mobile phones and bottles). The nice chunky switchgear, clearly labelled buttons are carry-overs from the old model with the only change being a new sound system. It now features Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity, with additional buttons for answering or rejecting phone calls mounted on the steering wheel.

    • The first generation Sharan that we got in the late 90's was a handsome looking MPV, this latest model is no different. Employing an edgy front end of the company's new design language, the whole car features strong, clean and bold lines. It also has lots of glass and a panoramic sunroof that allows natural light in.
    • On the inside, the soft materials, leather and wide expanse of space make you feel at ease right away. Switchgear and controls are typical Volkswagen standard, sturdy and user-friendly - they haven't fixed the annoying audio power button though (if you've read my previous articles on VW cars, you'd remember that I'm anal about the fact that the power button sign rotates with the button when you turn it. I know, it's small thing, but it annoys me nonetheless.).
  • Undoubtedly, the technical aspect of the car is one of the most important. In almost all driving situations, the 16-valve four-cylinder turbo diesel engine offers the strength of a V8 sports car – a little lazy initially but once you hit that sweet spot, in the case of the GTD it’s before 2,500rpm, the world around you just turns into a blur.

    • The beauty of this turbo diesel engine is how it pulls to speed - strong from 1,500 rpm up to 5,000 rpm, with no sign of an asthma attack along the way. Ok, so the engine note can come across as “a lil’ clattery” when compared to its petrol derivative, but it’s still within acceptable level.
    • The GTD shares the venerable six-speed twin clutch DSG from its GTI brethren. I’m glad to report that this ‘box remains highly efficient throughout, from one all the way to six. Of course if you want to have a more satisfying drive, just swap your own gears via the paddle-shifter. By doing this, you can potentially forget the fact that it… is… a… diesel.
