After a solid four years of vouching for that grunty turbocharged four-cylinder in the 718 Cayman, Stuttgart has had a bit of an epiphany and done a U-turn. They've went and plonk in a slightly detuned version of the latest Cayman GT4's 4.0-litre flat-six, and gave life to this - the new Cayman GTS. Wait, didn’t this name previously exist? You see, Porsche already introduced a 'GTS' version of the 982-generation 718 Cayman back in the spring of 2018. It had a 2.5-litre flat-four turbo engine, juiced up to 361bhp. It was fun, sure, but didn’t have the same kind of ferocity as other competitors. This latest one though, launched back in 2020, dumps the flat-4-pot for a 6er, and my god it makes a ton of difference. So, if you were one of the proud owners of the first-gen 982-GTS, well, you might want to make yourself a cup of tea and sit this one out. A new engine has been fitted into the V40, but can that raise its profile as a sporty hatchback now?


With 430 hp at 7,000 rpm and 440 Nm of torque from 4,000 rpm, 0-100 km/h is dispatched in 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 290 km/h. Helping to harness all that power is a comprehensive range of new aero elements - a new ultra-lightweight front clam with unique carbon fibre ducts has wider radiator apertures and a new mesh pattern grille to provide a more combative aspect and to allow for a new front splitter and air curtain mechanism to reduce drag. The lightweight rear clam panel supports the larger, straight motorsport wing to increase downforce without impacting the car’s overall drag coefficient. The new design front and rear clam panels are 6.8 kg lighter than those on any other Exige. Lotus’ expertise in lightweight design has played its part in reducing the overall dry weight by 12 kg to 1,059 kg, with the vehicle down to 1,056 kg in its lightest configuration. This, combined with the dramatic jump in raw power, raises the Cup’s power to weight from 355 hp / tonne (Cup 380) to 407 hp / tonne.

The GT4 Clubsport is blessed with many of the same traits that make its street-going sibling a riot to drive, such as bodywork that helps to produce genuine downforce on both axles, a lower, wider track and a mid-mounted 3.8 liter flat six engine that produces 385hp. However alterations have been made to beef up the base car, such as front suspension that has been lifted wholesale from a GT3 cup car while the rear has a revised strut design with GT3 cup car control arms. The 6-piston front and 4-piston rear brake calipers are also a one piece design now for added strength.

Barely a year into this new appointment, Aston Martin's CEO, Dr Andy Palmer, is swapping his business suit for a race suit as he lines up alongside three fellow drivers to campaign a V8 Vantage GT4.


The Cayman GT4 is powered by a mid-mounted, 3.8-litre flat-six engine with 385 hp (283 kW) produced at 7,400 rpm, which is derived from the 911 Carrera S engine. Its power is transmitted by a standard six-speed manual gearbox with dynamic gearbox mounts - there is no PDK transmission option, which should be good news to purists. This translates to a 0-100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds; top speed is 295 km/h. The car\'s NEDC fuel consumption is 9.7 km/L, equivalent to 238 g/km CO2.

Despite all those nuances, the V60 responds nicely to corners with lots of grip. Go hard on the brakes, dive into the corner, exit with your foot on the accelerator and let the stability control figure out where to send the power to. Or, if you are feeling brave, enter the vehicle settings menu and turn the stability aid off. While this makes the car break away in predictable under steer once the limit is breached, it is a bit hard to get it to behave again.
