The Baby Benz Grows Up | Mercedes-Benz A200 Urban

Mercedes-Benz calls it the “rebel” of the family. Like most rebels, they may have some traits that you'll admire about them, but most prove to be very hard to live with.

Photos: Mark Wong Remember the original Merc A-class? What a shock that must have been when it hit showrooms in 1997, with its cupboa ... MORE

    • With that, Mercedes decided to eschew the upright mini-MPV look and tackle the Audi A3 and BMW 1-series head-on. This means a conventional front-engined hatchback with a choice of 2 turbocharged four-pots sending power to the front wheels. In our case, we have the 156 bhp A200 Urban, the sportier variant of the 1.6l engine.
    • If there’s one aspect the new baby Benz excels, it’s in its styling. It looks squat and purposeful, with some neat touches like the gloss black front valance and wing mirrors. Surprisingly for a small car, this is also the most successful interpretation of Mercedes’ new wide, two-bar grille, certainly much better integrated than on the SL and CLS. Others have found the styling too fussy, with too many creases and lines all over the place, but I like it. It does, however, need large rims to complete the look, and the 18-inchers on our test car fill out the wheelarches perfectly.
  • Of course, the car is nothing more than a concept at this point in time. That said, if the Provo ever entered production, how much of the radical design would actually make it into the final product? The car in its current form is certainly quite striking though, thanks to the contrasting roof color, one-piece headlight and taillight housings, and oversized wheel arches paired with radical wheels.

    • If you think that this car was all about its striking sheetmetal, then you’d be wrong. The car has an equally radical cabin to match the insane exterior. The leather inside is diamond quilted, with chrome, suede and carbonfibre accents to match. A flat-bottomed steering wheel completes the racy look.
    • Power comes from a petrol-fuelled turbocharged engine with clever regenerative-electric motors, meaning mad power and decent economy. The motors will be able to provide power to the rear wheels in low-traction situations, as well as provide low speed electric-only motion.
  • I've always been fond of Peugeot's car designs. The 308, RCZ and the new 508 GT in particular are my personal favorites. I can't say the same for the 408 though. Somehow, the proportions look a bit wrong to me. Somehow, the proportions look a bit wrong to me. That said, I could be the only one with that view, because almost everywhere I took the 408, people were staring - no kidding - this regular sedan was turning heads!
    • Granted, the car has a sleek looking face - long sharp headlamps and a shark-like nose give it a elegant yet aggressive stance, but the rear seems to taper off a little to steep and too abruptly for my liking. That, plus the high middle section, makes you look like you're driving a mountain. Ok, maybe it's not that bad, after all, the 408 was conceived to be a sedan right from the start, so odd as some sections seem to me, it does come together to produce an overall handsome-ish profile (from some angles).
    • Step inside and the feeling of spaciousness is not merely a notion, there really is a lot of room in here. The dash is pretty familiar, most of the knobs, dials, trimmings and instrument cluster are clearly Peugeot family parts. Materials used are good with a mix of chrome trimmings, black inserts, and the generous application of brown leather on our test-car ups the 'premium' feel. The door handles on the inside seem rather plasticky though, that's about the only gripe for me.
  • Straight-up, you'll still be faced with the boxy looks. No swoopy rooflines and eye-pleasing curves - just the good 'ole 3 box design. Like the Range Rover we reviewed earlier, this fine example has been face-lifted with some snazzy LED daytime running lights and more LED business in the rear. • Being second to the Range Rover doesn't mean second-tier engineering. The Disco gets air suspension which can lower it for easy access, to a very generous 31 cm of ground clearance. You'll get the all-wheel drive hardware as well as the Terrain Response system and hill descent control.
    • Boxy design lends to a huge side profile, but with such dimensions it’s no surprise to fine the Disco has a spacious cabin. It will seat seven with space to spare, even those whom you'll have to throw in the rear. And just note that the front wheels are so close to the front end... that's Land Rover's love for crazy approach angles for you.

Thankfully, Allan McNish and Mike Rockenfeller were reported to be in good shape after the two incidents. With two cars out of the team, Audi had to face the barrage of Peugeots that kept piling on pressure throughout the race.
    • It also was a race filled with breakdowns. Out of the 56 cars that started, only 27 made it to the finish line, with 29 retiring from various faults. Frankfurt To Host ROC 2011

The 24th Race Of Champions will be held on the weekend of December 3-4, 2011 at the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt, Germany.

German motor racing superstars Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel are celebrating again at the news that the Race Of Champions will ... MORE

    • In recent years the Race Of Champions has visited the Stade de France in Paris (2004-2006), London’s Wembley Stadium (2007-2008), Beijing’s ‘Bird’s Nest’ Olympic Stadium (2009) and Düsseldorf’s ESPRIT arena (2010). Now ROC 2011 will return to Germany and the city of Frankfurt, to the delight of the pairing that has all but made the ROC Nations Cup its own. Reigning Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel said: “After winning the world championship there were a lot of emotions and pictures in my head that I will never forget. One was racing at the Race Of Champions in front of my home crowd and to win the ROC Nations Cup with Michael for Team Germany. So I enjoyed it a lot, up to the point where I got beaten in the semi-final of the individual event! Every year I get a little further. First I made it to the round of 16, then the quarter-final, then the semi-final. So hopefully this year I will make it into the final and win it. That’s the big target for Frankfurt in December. We all have a lot of fun every time we go, but the moment we put our helmets on we take it very seriously and we go hard.”

Seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher added: “It’s important to us to be in our home country so we’re really looking forward to throwing some beautiful cars around the Frankfurt circuit in December. Last year it was a great atmosphere. You’re so close to the fans that you can hear them even though the engines are noisy. And I’m sure it will be even better in Frankfurt. We have a strong line-up in the ROC Nations Cup but no doubt the other nations will have plenty of motivation to finally beat us. Unfortunately the individual event takes place on the last day and we always have a good party after Team Germany wins so I guess I’m not completely fresh… I’ll try to work on that this year and I very much look forward to having lots of support. We need lots of cheering and lots of crossed fingers so please all come!”
    • It’s not just about the home team, as the Race Of Champions brings together stars from all over the world. Last year’s roll call included the greatest drivers of all time from the World Rally Championship (Sébastien Loeb), Le Mans (Tom Kristensen) and World Touring Cars (Andy Priaulx) plus legendary names including Alain Prost, Mick Doohan, Carl Edwards and Travis Pastrana. Even given that dazzling field, the individual Champion of Champions title was taken by a driver who surprised the lot of them: Portugal’s Filipe Albuquerque, who defeated Vettel in the semi-final and Loeb in a tense Grand Final by fractions of a second.

a more balanced weight distribution. The R18’s headlights, which are the first to completely consist of LEDs with optimised amount of light, are a technical highlight. The new generation of headlights was developed in close cooperation between Audi Sport and the Technical Development (TE) division of AUDI AG, and using it at Le Mans will further prepare it for future use in production vehicles. Audi’s light designers had the chance to make their mark on the development as well: The LEDs of the daytime light form the shape of a “1” which is intended to inspire associations with Audi’s historic brand logo.

    • Significantly smaller engines than those used before will be utilised at Le Mans
in 2011 as the rule makers aim to achieve a substantial reduction of engine
power. By opting for a 3.7-litre V6 TDI unit, Audi retains the diesel concept
that saw its first victorious fielding in 2006. “From our point of view, the TDI
continues to be the most efficient technology,” says Ulrich Baretzky, Head of
Engine Development at Audi Sport. “There are good reasons why the share of TDI units among Audi’s production models is as high as it is.” Through the innovative V6 TDI engine for the Le Mans 24 Hours, motor sports is yet again performing pioneering work for the production arm at Audi, where there is a growing trend towards smaller, more economical but yet powerful engines. Another new development is the six-speed transmission in the R18, which has been specifically modified for use with the smaller engine.
    • With regards to the chassis, Audi Sport wants to live up to the promise expressed in the brand’s “Vorsprung durch Technik” tagline. Unlike those of
the closed Le Mans prototypes, the carbon fibre monocoque of the R18 does not consist of two halves. Instead, it features a single-component design that saves weight and increases stiffness. For the development of the closed R18, engineers at Audi Sport were able to draw on the experiences gained in 1999 with the R8C, as well as 2003 with the victorious LMP1 of the corporate “sister brand” Bentley. “Also, the Audi A4 DTM, which features a heated windshield, allowed us to shorten the development cycle with respect to the ventilation of the cockpit, the doors and the heating of the windshield,” explains Dr. Martin Mühlmeier, Head of Engineering at Audi Sport.
  • So how does alcohol affect one's ability to drive? Alcohol as we know, inhibits the brain’s ability to function effectively, slowing the relay of visual messages from the eyes, processing of information thus becomes more difficult and instructions to the muscles are delayed. Alcohol usually retards a person’s reaction time by 10 to 30% as well as the reduction of the ability to gauge speed and distances. Alcohol also reduces one’s ability to see distant objects, to use peripheral vision to perceive what is happening at the roadside and reduce night vision by 25%. Blurred and double vision may also occur. Alcohol may also give one a sense of overconfidence, with the result that they may be prepared to take greater risks, such as abrupt lane changing or speeding. Impaired judgement may also alter a person’s perception of how fit they are to drive. Finally, as alcohol is a depressant drug, it may make a driver drowsy and affect their sense of balance. A person who drives after they have had only one drink is still five times more likely to get him or herself involved in a traffic accident than one who abstains from alcohol.

    • Currently the Singapore Traffic Police's drink driving legislation is based on blood alcohol concentration (BAC). This is a measure of the amount of alcohol in the blood. In Singapore, it is illegal to drive with a BAC of over and including 80 milligrams or 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millimetres of blood. Drivers whose breathalyser tests exceed either limit may be charged regardless of their ability to control their vehicles. If convicted, stiff penalties will be imposed, where offenders are liable to a disqualification of their license for one year or more, fined up to three times the maximum penalty of S$10,000, jailed up to 10 years and caning of up to six strokes should death or serious injury be caused. So for this festive period, if you want to indulge in some drinking, leave your car keys at home. Be responsible, if you drink don't ever drive!
