And majestic it truly was. A short 10 minutes drive from the resort, we — ok, the X3 — climbed up all the way to the Seruni Point lookout point. Yes, most of the stock photos of the famed Mount Bromo sunrise you find online were taken at this exact spot. And how can I forget? Standing at the highest lookout point, you could also catch the moon in all its glory along with the Milky Way — I kid you not — here. If I may, this has to be one of the glorious views I’ve ever experienced hence now I understand why Mount Bromo attract visitors by the droves.

I’ve always loved racing, when I went for F1 here a couple of times, I realized that it was one of my dreams, so I researched on what we could do to get there - that’s what got me into it and I’ve loved it ever since.

1. Who, or what started you on karting?

I went for holiday in Phuket and visited a go-kart track with my dad who took me around on a two-seater kart. It was quite slow compared to the ones here, but I really enjoyed it and loved the speed even though my dad is quite a bad driver. I cried when we had to go, and really wanted to get my own (go-kart).

When we got back to Singapore, he bought me a secondhand kart. From then on I just practiced a lot at the old track in Jurong — I did a lot of hours and really enjoyed it.

This was when he became champion of the 2014 Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, becoming the first non-Kiwi ever to do so. Sadly, his rapid rise up the ranks was curtailed by National Service, but he’s since bounced back from that setback, having been picked up by the Porsche China Junior Team in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, where he’s currently lying 3rd in the Championship, with two race wins under his belt. We caught up with him recently to try and dig deeper and find the driving force behind Singapore’s latest driving prodigy.
