Has the horsepower arms race ended yet? If cars like the car tested here are anything to go by, Subaru could well be at the leading edge of a new movement. Yet, the surprise is that it might not be a bad thing. The Subaru Forester e-Boxer 2.0i-S Eyesight Hybrid as the car tested here is called in full makes all of 150hp and 194Nm of torque. Quite a long way off the heady days when the mighty 2.0XT made up to 240hp less than a decade ago. The downside of the XT however, was its woeful fuel efficiency as it came with a four-speed automatic and needed a heavy weight engine oil and had to be fed high octane petrol. Add all-wheel drive into the mix and you’ve got a recipe for a proper guzzler. These days, when fuel prices being what they are, the Forester needs to work smarter, not harder to stay relevant in the market. To this end, Subaru has done exactly that. Subaru bridges the gap between the Impreza and Forester with the refreshed XV


First a bit about the car. The 160 bhp 2.4-litre Estima came shod with oddly matched forged staggered wheels that while I think look cool, are better fitted on a RWD car. Nonetheless, I've decided to keep them on since they work fine and are in pretty good condition. The tyres though, were not. Wrapped in mismatched brands (one Toyo, one Dunlop, two China-brand), it just made me uneasy whenever I spent time on the road.

Probably it all boiled down to luck and fate, but while I was looking around the market, I couldn’t seem to find a suitable car. Most of the SG-generation Subaru Forester 2.5 XT I viewed either had too much modifications (I’m always keen on a car that is in full stock condition), had too high a mileage (saw an early 2008 model with almost 260,000 km on the odometer), looked tired or already had a bad history (badly maintained, uneven paint surfaces or showed signs of previous accidents). I was about to go back to the drawing board and reconsider my options, but Managing Editor, Joel suggested a Subaru Impreza WRX instead; at that point he had just sent his 2005 Subaru Forester to the scrapyard (COE woes, what else?). The satisfaction he had during his time with the car obviously made him gave me that idea.

In conclusion, the Subaru Forester 2.0 i-P has maintained its reputation as being both a robust and reliable family transport, but with slightly more style and even better goodies this time around. Power may not be its strongest suit, but it sure made up for it in many other positive ways.

We flew to Bangkok to sample the freshened Forester


Out on the expressway, the Cashcow is surprisingly refined to drive. Nissan’s engineers seemed to have put in lots of effort at keeping the cabin quiet and as vibration-free as possible; at expressway legal cruising speeds, sounds from the engine compartment are hardly audible, you don’t get any transmission shift shocks and wind noise can only be heard past 120 km/h. Very well played, Nissan.

The natural trade-off though, is in its ability to carve a corner. Despite how tall the Forester is, body roll is less prevalent than expected, no doubt thanks to the Boxer drivetrain’s low centre of gravity, but unless you really enjoy feeling a car at its limit no matter how easily reached it is (which I do), there’s not much reward to be gained from hustling it. The tyres are designed for low rolling resistance and hence give up very easily, running out of grip at even moderate speeds, while the electric steering, though light and easy to twirl at parking speeds, has a vague, non-linear response during the first few degrees of lock. On initial turn-in the steering feels overly light but after that it firms up, with nice weighting and progression through the rest of the turn.

Looks familiar? You will have to really squint to spot the difference between the new Forester and last year's model. Other than a tweaked grille design, we too couldn't spot any major changes when we managed to park our test car next to last year's model.

Subaru Club Singapore Meetup

The Subaru Club in Singapore, which comprises of mainly Imprezas, WRXs and Foresters had an evening meetup recently. We were there to snap some photos and catch up with the guys.


While Outbacks of the past look like jacked-up station wagons, the XV looks refreshingly different. Designed around the “Protren” (Professional tool and trendy design) concept, it looks good with the hexagon grille, winged motifs and hawk-eye headlights.
