First of all, let’s clarify the biggest detail about the all-new Lexus NX 350 F Sport tested here. Despite the number in its moniker, this Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) DOES NOT have a 3.5-litre V6 under its bonnet. Instead, it is powered by a 2,393cc turbocharged in-line 4-cylinder unit. In case you were wondering if this might be an allusion to its power output, it makes 275hp, 21hp less than the last Lexus to bear the venerable ‘350’ badge. It gets more interesting. The larger, Lexus RX 300 is fitted with a 1,998cc turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It is not too often that a flagship model gets a smaller engine. Ok, let’s move on. The NX 300h looks rather radical compared to its peers in the segment though. There are bold lines, stunning creases, stylish head and rear lights; a lot of work went into designing the exterior itself. That front face with the highly detailed bumper finished with a one-piece spindle grille, looks ready to swallow anything in its way. The only downside are those wheels that still look undersized and out of place on the car. Oh, those are 18-inch mind you.

The Lexus Driving Experience saw a group of keen Lexus owners steer not just their silky smooth machines round the Sepang F1 circuit, but also a pair of high performance IS F super saloons.


What you need to take note of however is the uninspiring note coming from the bonnet. If you are the sort who is used to hearing the warble of V8s or whirr of force-fed power plants, you might probably just drop your jaws… in amusement. But hey, it is a hybrid after all — the smoothness and seamless operations (both lump and box) is a given. The fact that it starts and idles quietly is also pretty amazing. By the way, the CT200h can be driven solely on a fully charged electric motor at speeds of up to 45km/h before the petrol engine actually kicks in, vibration-free.

With such unassuming looks and the fire-power it packs, we wished it came with a madder name, like Lexus Surprise Attack Weapon!


The 2.5-litre V6 unit is unchanged and pushes out a healthy 205bhp from its 24-valve Dual VVTi set-up. It is a quiet and smooth powerplant and dispatches the century sprint in a rather quick 8.4 seconds. Yet somehow, the car seems to lack the 'oomph' the figures suggest. It could be partly due to the overall (excellent) refinement that masks the speed.

This is the newly restyled Lexus IS 250. Not much has changed you say? Well, you couldn't be more right, and wrong.


The new IS 250 is powered by a 2.5-litre D4 Direct Fuel Injection V6 engine, combined with Dual VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligence) system, providing the highest levels of output and power performance in its class, along with superior fuel economy and low-exhaust emissions. The V6 engine with Dual VVT-i system, controls and optimizes the exhaust valve timing as well as intake, resulting in the superb fuel economy at all engine rev ranges, from idling to high speed together with seamless power output from low and middle rev to high rev ranges. The D4 system enables intake cooling from the in-cylinder direct fuel injection system, leading to better filling efficiency and reduced liability to knocking. This enables a higher compression ratio, for greater output performance and improved fuel economy.
