A small petrol engine that powers Ford cars including the new Fiesta has fought off competition from premium brands and supercars to win the ‘Oscars’ of the engine world for an unprecedented third time in a row. Ford Motor Company’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine – which lowers fuel consumption without sacrificing power – today was named 2014 International Engine of the Year for its drivability, performance, economy, refinement and technology.

In our test though, we left it on the dashboard to charge. With just over an hour of direct sun, we could easily fully charge our iPhone 5. That's almost as fast as plugging it into the wall! It's versatile at the same time and can be charged via the sun, wall or USB connector.

In a recent drive up to Malaysia, we brought along a rather interesting gadget to aid our multiple-phone charging woes. A solar-powered charger that worked remarkably well!

In order to convert such power into efficient propulsion, the front axle is equipped with a mechanical, multi-plate limited-slip differential. This helps reduce wheel slip when there are very high lateral forces under acceleration, for example, or changes in the texture of the road surface. It is also ideal for forays onto the race track.

Looks like everyone is having a Nürburgring Edition of some sort nowadays. The limited Opel Corsa OPC is one of them, just 500 units of this raw pocket-rocket powerhouse will be available.


A seven-speed DSG gearbox with paddle shifters is fitted as standard. The new car also comes fitted with the same electronic transverse differential lock (XDS) you find on a Golf GTI. It electronically mimics a limited slip differential to reduce the tendency to under steer and deliver the power to the road more efficiently.

Citroën has unleashed an all-new contender for the 2011 World Rally Championship - the Citroën DS3 WRC, the hotly anticipated replacement for the multi-championship winning C4 WRC.


Disc brakes are fitted to all wheels, with ventilated discs and Brembo double piston, fixed calipers at the front. Suspension is derived from a tried and tested Abarth configuration with the front provided by independent McPherson struts, while rear suspension is semi-independent with a torsion bar. Abarth has also fitted a larger anti-roll bar together with front springs that are 20% harder than those of a standard suspension system.
