The latest iteration of Volkswagen’s iconic hot hatch is now in Singapore with more power and an all-new digitalised interior


At launch, the Golf TSI debuts with a new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged TSI engine, offering 108 bhp and 200 Nm of torque — 25 Nm more than the outgoing 1.2-litre TSI unit. Power increases are also seen in the Golf GTI and Golf R, now producing 226 and 286 bhp respectively.

Handling wise, there is no surprise that the M235i possesses an exceptionally high level of grip — even more than the slightly tweaked M135i I reviewed before. You could feel the traction control holding the car together as you attack tightening corners (read: Tampines Avenue 5 into PIE, Xilin Avenue into ECP, Bedok South Avenue 1 into ECP), and that adds an extra sense of confidence; this is complimented further by the positive and meaty steering even nearing the limits. And oh, credit should also be given to the low-profile 225/30 R-19 front and 245/30 R-19 rear Pirelli P Zero rubbers fitted.

Handling wise, the Golf R is pinpoint sharp and definitely feels one notch higher than the GTI. Thanks to the 4Motion four-wheel drive system, ever alert traction control and XDS cross differential lock, you can enter tight corners at speed and also flick the car into a turn without worrying about any understeer. In fact, you might even feel the rear about to throw itself into a drift but like magic, the car will just correct itself. That said, body-roll is still obvious; it’s not the sort that throws you off, but the type that adds more sensation into your drive. If you want something that is more focused on all out grip and controlled body movements, then you might want to look at Renault’s Megane RS instead…

For a country that prides itself on manufacturing some of the world's best cars, the German made Golf has made history by being the first non-Japanese car to win this award.


Setting the R apart from other Golfs are different bumpers front and rear, as well as a diffuser and quad chrome-tipped tailpipes. 18-inch ‘Cadiz’ wheels are standard, 19s an option, and the R gets a unique paint colour called Lapis Blue metallic. KESSY offers the driver the highest level of convenience as the transmitter need not necessarily be held in the hand to enter and start the car. As soon as a driver enters a radius of approximately 1.5 metres around the vehicle, the transmitter is identified by the proximity sensors in the door handles and by a radio impulse sensor in the key housing. Touching the door handles or the logo on the boot lid automatically unlocks the vehicle. The release of the steering lock and the ignition of the engine are carried out by pressing the start-stop button on the steering column. After leaving the vehicle, the driver can lock the vehicle by pressing the integrated lock buttons on the door handles.
