In the latest 2023 Impact Report, SGP announced a commendable 20.7% reduction in emissions from the 2022 baseline within a five-month reporting period, with total emissions amounting to 1880.80t (CO2e). This feat excludes freight, logistics, and travel by Formula 1 and its teams. Energy is the primary source of emissions for the event. Direct emissions from fuel combustion, known as Scope 1, accounted for 46.56% of total emissions, representing a significant 40.97% decrease from the previous year. This reduction was primarily driven by substituting diesel with low-carbon alternatives for power generators and other energy management initiatives. In 2023, SGP powered select generators in the Circuit Park with biodiesel, including Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), and increased the use of B100 biodiesel. The plan is to extend the use of green fuels across all generators by 2028, potentially reducing energy emissions by up to 52%.

Half the engine, half the fun?


Back in the '80s, during F1's original turbo era, Porsche was an engine supplier, providing McLaren Racing with a 1.5-litre twin-turbo V6. But before putting it into the race car, it had to be tested, and for that, McLaren and Porsche stuck it unmodified into a 930 Turbo test mule. This white prototype - largely unmodified save for 17-inch RUF wheels, a front bumper from the 930 Flatnose, and a taller whaletail engine cover with extra vents - was kept secret by McLaren until it surfaced in the middle of last decade.

The T-GDi’s single-scroll turbocharger is paired with an electric waste-gate motor, which improves the turbocharger’s performance with a highly efficient air scavenging strategy. As well as scavenging clean air for the engine to re-use for combustion, it is able to open the waste-gate at the same time to improve waste air flow. This innovative system allows for greater low-end torque, more immediate engine response from any throttle position, and improved fuel economy under higher engine loads.In the Kia cee’d GT Line, the engine’s maximum 172 Nm torque is available across a wide 1,500-4,100 rpm range, with maximum power arriving at 6,000 rpm. The engine is also fitted with an integrated exhaust manifold, which lowers the exhaust gas temperature slightly. As well as improving high speed, high load fuel economy, lower temperatures also result in cleaner emissions by allowing the catalytic converter to operate more effectively.

Renault Group owes this performance to the recent rejuvenation of its model ranges, notably including five models that return less than 100g of CO2/km (Twingo, New Clio, Captur, Mégane and Dacia Sandero). Indeed, in the small five-seater diesel car sector, New Clio Energy dCi 90 eco² is the class leader with 83g of CO2/km. Overall, the New Renault Clio range emits 18.5g of CO2/km less than the model’s previous generation.

Renault Group - Number One In Europe For Low CO2 Emissions

Renault Group has become the European leader in terms of low CO2 emissions based on its sales of passenger cars over the first half of 2013.


The first fruit borne of this effort is the little i3 electric city car. And we do mean little — at 3,999 mm in length, 1,775 mm in width and 1,578 mm in height, the i3 is 326 mm shorter, 10 mm wider and 158 mm taller than BMW’s smallest model, the 1-Series. Unlike most EVs, it’s light too. Thanks to an aluminium chassis, and the world’s first mass produced carbonfibre-reinforced-plastic (CFRP) monocoque body, the i3 weighs in at a relatively paltry 1,195 kg. This means that fewer batteries are required to provide propulsion for the car, which has the knock-on effect of reducing weight further still. The inherent strength of carbonfibre also means that the i3 can afford to do without a B-pillar, combining with the suicide rear doors to make a massive aperture.
