McLaren’s Ultimate Road-Legal Track Car

Named after legendary F1 driver Ayrton Senna, the McLaren Senna is limited to only 500 units


The largest changes to the new S-Class occur under the bonnet, with new engines debuting in two models — a new 4.0-litre V8 in the S560L, and an AMG 4.0-litre biturbo V8 in the S63. Despite offering 469 hp and 700 Nm of torque, the S560L’s engine is among the most economical V8 petrol engines in the world, consuming about 10 percent less fuel than its predecessor. This is achieved with cylinder deactivation technology and the CAMTRONIC valve-lift adjustment system, which deactivates four cylinders under partial load.

But if you do have the occasional sporting intents, I'm glad to report that you can stretch it all the way to its 6,000 rpm redline with the engine duly gaming on; that said, it tends to sound gruff anywhere past the 4,500 rpm mark.

With 430 hp at 7,000 rpm and 440 Nm of torque from 4,000 rpm, 0-100 km/h is dispatched in 3.3 seconds with a top speed of 290 km/h. Helping to harness all that power is a comprehensive range of new aero elements - a new ultra-lightweight front clam with unique carbon fibre ducts has wider radiator apertures and a new mesh pattern grille to provide a more combative aspect and to allow for a new front splitter and air curtain mechanism to reduce drag. The lightweight rear clam panel supports the larger, straight motorsport wing to increase downforce without impacting the car’s overall drag coefficient. The new design front and rear clam panels are 6.8 kg lighter than those on any other Exige. Lotus’ expertise in lightweight design has played its part in reducing the overall dry weight by 12 kg to 1,059 kg, with the vehicle down to 1,056 kg in its lightest configuration. This, combined with the dramatic jump in raw power, raises the Cup’s power to weight from 355 hp / tonne (Cup 380) to 407 hp / tonne.

Despite Singapore having one of the lowest fatality rates in the world of 15.8 deaths per 100,000 motor vehicles, Bosch believes that there is room for improvement, especially when compared to other highly developed cities. With this 252 bhp variant (the base model gets 190 bhp), Quattro is standard. The lovely new chassis platform known as 'MLB-Evo chassis' yields a car that is lighter, more playful and nimble on the road. Steering inputs are precisely executed and while a little on the light side, never feels vague. I’d dare say the combination of a strong power output and sublime handling almost makes this A5 quite S5-like! I enjoyed driving it more than I did the 3.0-litre S4.
