To ensure the tyre was appropriate for European roads and climate, Falken used its engineering team based in Frankfurt to develop the specification. In addition to testing on European public roads and private proving grounds, engineers also gained feedback from Falken’s racing drivers at the Nürburgring who tested the tyres. The resulting “NUR-Spec” design incorporates a more warp resistant casing and additional nylon-reinforced cover ply to increase high-speed stability. This construction is complemented by a rounder tyre shoulder, optimising pressure deployment on the tread area.

The entry point to VW’s wide range of cars, the new Polo 1.2 TSI is more powerful than the outgoing 1.4. It now boasts 90 bhp and 160 Nm, and does the century sprint in only 10.9 seconds courtesy of a 1,197cc turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 7-speed DSG gearbox. Also available is a more powerful ‘Sport’ variant, producing 105 bhp and 175 Nm of torque. It goes from 0-100km/h in only 9.7 seconds.

The car is well damped with an impressive compression and rebound rate from the suspension. This kept the chassis flat as I took on a series of left-and-rights around the slalom stage.

But before we get all carried away shooting this GTi (yes, with a small ‘i’ to not be confused with the other GTI) down, let’s put this into perspective: a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. Importantly, with or without traction control working, the front suspension does a grand job of transferring all the power to the road without undue tricks (what understeer?).

From the lightning quick shifts from the S-tronic gearbox, to the sensational 5-cylinder engine soundtrack, this car is fast, fast, fast. The quattro drivetrain helps keep you in check too, so you can really exploit all that power. There's no doubt this car will smack the smirk off anyone driving a much more expensive sportscar. EVO or STi? No problem. Unless they've got a huge aftermarket turbo under the bonnet, the result will be the same - Germany 1, Japan 0.
