Everything to know about the hyped Tesla Cybertruck

BY Sean Loo

After four years, the long-awaited launch of the Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup has come and gone. But, was it worth the hype?

The moment we've all been waiting for has finally rolled in - the Tesla Cybertruck has hit the streets, or rather, it's gearing up to hit them.

After a four-year wait that felt longer than a cross-country road trip, this angular beast has made its grand entrance. It's been a journey, complete with smashing windows and a touch of cyberpunk flair.

Now, let's dive into the nitty-gritty and answer the burning questions you've probably tossed into your mental search bar about this new truck.

First things first, what is this Cybertruck all about? Well, it's not your run-of-the-mill pickup; it's the electric offspring of Tesla, wrapped in stainless steel armour. Less than 19 feet long, a bed longer than six feet, four doors, and room for six adults.

Back in 2019, Tesla teased us with specs, promising three variants. Fast forward, and the details have now been finalised. We're talking a single-motor rear-wheel drive starting at USD$39,900, an all-wheel drive with a 340 mile (547 km) range, and a tri-motor Cyberbeast, packing 845hp, a 2.6-second century sprint, and a cool USD$99,990 price tag. Here’s a chart for easy reference:

Now, why does it look like it just drove out of a sci-fi flick? Well, Elon Musk wanted that cyberpunk, post-apocalyptic vibe, and steel was the canvas. Tough as nails, but shaping it was a challenge. Hence, delays and a design that screams "future armoured personnel carrier." Views are polarising, but you cannot deny it looks absolutely striking.

Is it up for grabs yet? Not quite. Mass production kicks in around 2024, but unless you have the Midas touch, securing one won't be a walk in the park.

Talking money, prices have waltzed higher. The rear-wheel version starts at USD$60,990, the all-wheel drive at USD$79,990, and the Cyberbeast just shy of USD$100,000. But beware, the US federal tax credit waltzes away if your pick breaches the USD$80,000 mark.

Practicality check: can a bike hitch a ride in the Cybertruck's bed? Well, it's roomy, with beds longer than six feet. But adult bicycles might stick out of the tailgate. Motorcycles? Maybe not. This ain't your grandpa's Silverado.

Now, the big question - environmental vibes. EVs are eco-darlings, but let's not ignore the fine print. Yes, they're greener, but they're not planting forests. And this Cybertruck, being a beefy boy, does raise eyebrows about its carbon footprint. Only time will tell.

You might want one right about now, but unfortunately, it’s extremely unlikely that the Cybertruck will ever make it to our sunny shores, given the infinite wisdom of our authorities. But if it does, expect it to go for a probably ridiculous sum of money.

As much as we like to joke, it’s still an impressive feat that Tesla has managed to bring the Cybertruck to life, and not keep it locked behind the realm of ‘concept-only’.

Whether you like it or not, the Tesla Cybertruck has certainly made waves the world over.
