On The Ground: Revving It Up With Legends Cars

BY Sean Loo

High-revving motorbike engines fitted to small fibreglass cars and made to go extremely fast round small tracks? Sign me up immediately.

Let’s face it, as automotive enthusiasts racing is pretty much part of our DNA. The visceral sensation of fast cars, thumping engines, and screeching tyres is enough to heighten the senses and captivate the collective minds of passion-driven folks.

Alas, entry to motorsports has always been a sort of stumbling block for many, due to high costs and steep entry fees. This usually means the elusive feeling of getting behind the wheel of a racecar is gatekept behind closed doors.

But, what if I told you there was a way to get in on the action, without incurring astronomical fees? Something better than plonking your rump into a go-kart?

That’s what these US Legends Cars are.

They may look reminiscent to proper cars, but these are actually scaled-down fibreglass customs built to resemble cars from the 30s and 40s. Think moonshine runners, that sort of deal.

The formula is simple - Strap a loud engine to the front, throw in a racing sequential gearbox, a bucket seat, and go brrrrrr on the track. The beating heart upfront in question is a XJ1250 Yamaha-derived motorbike engine, capable of revving to 14,000RPM and putting a smile on your face.

This was the engine that I piloted round the Legend Cars test track in Ipoh, Malaysia, and boy was it a hoot. This high-revving monster was wheel spinning even in 4th gear, and although it was on a short circuit, the Legend Car was engaging each time a corner presented itself. Hell, I even went through some of them sideways.

You do need some technical knowledge to drive one of these machines, but it’s not rocket science after all. In the US, youth as young as 15 are legally able to drive these and compete, so there’s your answer.

While I did not get to try them, the newer models featured a Yamaha FZ09 block instead. Despite its smaller capacity, this water-cooled fuel-injected engine produces more horsepower on tap. Just remember to brake if not you’ll find yourself trading paint with a wall. But! Even if you do, repairs are reasonably cheap.

And that’s the main ethos of the Legend Cars brand - to provide a fun and affordable racing opportunity in which anyone can compete. This series is an attempt to fight the high costs involved in racing, and the rules are strictly enforced to ensure fair competition and cost control.

Overall, these Legend Cars are an absolute blast to hoon round a track, and I’m confident you won’t find other forms of dedicated motorsport league racing this cheap, bar go-karting of course.

Interested to hear these cars in action yourself? Well, they will be making their way to Changi Exhibition Centre in August for a race. Expect high-adrenaline racing and great company, so it’s definitely a weekend you won’t want to miss.

Rock on, you legends.
