New Golf GTI Clubsport!

BY Azfar Hashim

To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI, VW presents a special edition Golf GTI Clubsport; production version will make an appearance at IAA Frankfurt

Like the 20th, 25th, 30th and 35th birthdays of the GTI that each comes with a special edition to mark each milestone, Volkswagen will be producing a limited version to commemorate the GTI's 40th birthday next year.

We begin with the most important part of the car: Uprated power. The turbocharged 2.0-litre direct-injection engine in the anniversary model delivers an output of 261 hp (+47 hp from the 'regular' version) and will come with an over-boost function (!!!) that increases power up to 286 hp simply by kicking down the accelerator.

The Golf GTI Clubsport sprints to 100 km/h from standstill in 6.0 seconds with a 6-speed manual gearbox; the version with 6-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox is even faster, at 5.9 seconds. Top speed however is limited to 250 km/h; 249 km/h for the DSG. On the flip side, VW promised good fuel economy - with a manual gearbox, consumption is 6.9 l/100 km (CO2: 160 g/km). With DSG, the figure comes in at 6.7 l/100 km (CO2: 155 g/km).

Besides additional powaaah, Volkswagen has also revised the exterior design extensively, along with higher equipment level and improved aerodynamic of this anniversary model. The Golf GTI Clubsport - seen in these photos in "Oryx White" - gets a contrasting roof painted in black. Besides that, the exterior designers have also created a completely new front bumper, side sills, rear diffuser, multi-part roof spoiler and exclusive forged 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch 'Bresica' alloys available as option). These features makes the anniversary model stand out from the standard GTI (yummy!).

The interior is not spared. They include ergonomic sports bucket seats with a tailor-made look featuring tartan fabric upholstery, red topstitching, a gear knob in golf ball design and a black headliner. The seats are partially covered with Alcantara and feature a honeycomb pattern in the area of the backrests and seat cushions; the backrest also incorporates GTI lettering.

2016 better come quick...
