Maserati has unleashed its latest track sensation, the Maserati GT2.


Guess who's back, back again. Maserati is finally back on track, after the MC12 left the tarmac back in the early 2000s. Autodromo Varano de’ Melegari was the setting for the car's track debut high-performance GT2, the car that epitomises the House of the Trident’s return to racing. The shakedown at the Parma circuit is the precursor to a series of events marking the run-up to the official unveiling of the car at the end of June in Belgium, at the 24 Hours of Spa.

The record was not a one-hit wonder either, as another GT2 RS piloted by Lars Kern and Nick Tandy was able to set multiple record-breaking laps before the ultimate final record time was set. It was Kern, a Porsche test driver by trade and a passionate racer, who accomplished the 6:47.3 record lap time with an average speed of 184.11 km/h.

The car everyone has been waiting for is finally here. Just off the port, these spanking new cars were freshly prepared for the media to have a taste.


What you need to take note of however is the uninspiring note coming from the bonnet. If you are the sort who is used to hearing the warble of V8s or whirr of force-fed power plants, you might probably just drop your jaws… in amusement. But hey, it is a hybrid after all — the smoothness and seamless operations (both lump and box) is a given. The fact that it starts and idles quietly is also pretty amazing. By the way, the CT200h can be driven solely on a fully charged electric motor at speeds of up to 45km/h before the petrol engine actually kicks in, vibration-free.

For lap after lap the three cars circulated in formation, each trying to push the other into a mistake. Their battle allowed Winklehock and Piccione to close up to make it a five way battle for the lead as the pitstops approached. On lap 13 Martin finally got past Dumbreck's Nissan at T18 for second place just as the pit window opened.
