This is great news, because cars bound for Europe are usually engineered to a higher degree, thanks to their stricter quality demands.
    • Like previous generations, the new Vios is once again made in Thailand, but this time doing away with its friendly, rounded face in favour of a much more angular, aggressive look. Under the new sheetmetal, the drivetrain is carried over unchanged from the old car, meaning a 1.5L engine with 107bhp, a 4-spd auto and 0-100 time of 12s. Hardly inspiring figures, but you can’t argue with 6.3l/100km and a $5,000 CEVS rebate.
    • The interior sees a different dashboard design, with the most notable change being the instrument cluster’s shift from the top of the dashboard to the more traditional position in front of the driver. Rear passengers are also well catered for, with a flat floor and slimmer front seats ensuring greater legroom, while the boot is a competitive 476 litres, large enough for 4 golf bags.

    • Of course, everything is relative. The most sporting Rolls in the world could never hope to be as focused as even the cushiest Ferrari. That said though, what cannot be disputed is the Wraith’s place in the company’s history: this is the most powerful car ever to roll out of the gates at Goodwood.
    • With 624bhp on tap and 800Nm from a mere 1,500rpm, the Wraith will waft its occupants to 100km/h in 4.6s before being reigned in at 250km/h. Compared to the Ghost, the smallest Rolls currently in the range, measures in at 130mm shorter, with a 183mm shorter wheelbase, 43mm lower height and 40mm wider track.

    E Stands For Evolution

It's a strange country we live in, where Mercedes is the best-selling brand, ahead of all the ordinary car makers. And this, the E-class is its most important model.

    • Unveiled recently in front of about 500 guests, the first thing that strikes you about the new E-class is the seeming disappearance of the quad-headlamp setup. Instead, the LED daytime running lights are now shaped to continue that “four-eyed” look. The taillamps, too, have been given a new look with LED strips. For the first time in an E-class, customers will have two different looks to choose from – the Elegance trim line retains Mercedes’ classic upright grille with the star on top, while Avantgarde cars have a sportier look, with the large star in the middle of the grille.
    • As ever with a Merc, safety is one of the top priorities, and the E-class can be had with a whole host of active and passive safety features which Mercedes dubs “Intelligent Drive”. They include features that can recognize if the driver is getting fatigued, ‘read’ street signs and display them in the car as reminders, detect if the car is drifting out of lane and, if necessary, apply the brakes to tug the car back in line, and one that can even automatically apply the brakes if there is an obstruction ahead, be it another car, pedestrians, or cross-traffic.

    • The hybrid system on its own contributes 160 bhp and 270 Nm of torque, and actually features two motors - one to assist the engine and the other to power the ancillaries. The batteries can be charged in two ways: using regenerative braking, like in F1 cars (or the Toyota Prius), or in situations where the engine produces more torque than can be effectively deployed (e.g. during cornering). All in, the whole HY-KERS system weights just 140 kg, 62 of which belong to the batteries.
    • As you'd expect, the chassis is made entirely of carbonfibre. Four different varieties, in fact, all hand-laminated and autoclave-cured by the same team that builds the F1 cars. In an effort to maximise torsional rigidity, the seat position is fixed into the chassis, the steering wheel and pedal box being adjustable instead, the end result being a driving position akin to that of a single-seater racing car. The batteries are also integrated into the chassis, in between and underneath the seats to lower the car's centre of gravity. Sadly (or maybe thankfully), “hybrid” needn’t necessarily equate to “eco-friendly”; with 330 g/km of CO2 produced, the LaFerrari is unfortunately not eligible for a CEVS rebate (not that that would put off potential buyers)…

    • After passing through the checkpoints, the cars regrouped and blasted up the North-South Highway in unison. Sheldon and myself made a good effort to do our best in this challenge and kept throttle-discipline during the drive up, keeping in mind the only rule for the challenge; that the last car had to be no more than 5 minutes away from the first car, upon arrival at the end-point. Sheldon being the more experienced 'eco' driver, made use of both the cruise control and optimal rev count to keep the consumption as low as possible.
    • Our car was the Passat 2.0 TDI with 140 bhp and a useful 320 Nm of torque. The figure to beat (or get close to) was the Passat's combined cycle of 5.2 l/100 km, and the challenge started once we turned out of the showroom. The gurus of driving holidays, Wheels For Fun, were our facilitators during the drive, and we convoyed through early morning traffic to make our way to the second link.
    • This wasn't just a driving trip though, as mentioned earlier, the road trip incorporated a food trail as well. Bak Kut Teh, Yong Tao Fu, and a host of other chinese and peranakan food fare, we had it all! Once we got to our hotel though, no time was wasted, we were immediately whisked away to our next 'eco' challenge, a mountain bike expedition to help burn away all the cholesterol we built up!
  • Well that engine is, along with the rest of the lineup, being phased out to make way for Audi’s potent supercharged 3.0 TFSI. But rather than the performance-tuned 333 bhp you'll find in say the S4, the Q5 has 272 bhp and 400 Nm of torque. Paired with Audi’s 8-speed Tiptronic transmission, it is the same quick-shifting unit you'll find on top tier Audi sedans. We would have loved for it to be mated to the S-tronic though, because the Q5 is a rather nifty handling SUV, and with all that power, it makes for a rather sporty drive.

Luxury Hatch On Stilts | Audi Q5 3.0 TFSI

Audi bid's their naturally aspirated 3.2 V6 farewell, and the updated Q5 SUV impresses with a good drive thanks to a new 3-litre power-plant pushing 272 bhp and a hefty 400 Nm.

    • Our test car came with chunky five-spoke 20
    • Outwardly the Q5 gets very subtle changes. The Audi grille now has a hexagonal shape, keeping to the latest look from Ingolstadt. The lower S-line bumpers on our test car gets some additional details at the ventilation vents. Also new are the front and rear LED headlamps with modern looking daytime-running lamps.
