When the Lotus Eletre first rocked up to the scene, it shocked motoring press worldwide. Controversial would be the word to describe the whole ordeal, mainly because ‘this’ is pretty much what the world thinks a Lotus shouldn’t be; a tech-laden lumbering electric SUV.

Mind you, this was never pitched as a game-changer; it simply exists as the Lotus of SUVs. But, the badge only tells half of the story here.

Despite the onslaught of virtual pitchforks and colourful comments, if you dig past the “hastily edited on template backgrounds” Colin Chapman quotes, there appears to be quite a bit of interest in Lotus heading in a new direction.

Extensive testing with the second generation Porsche 919 Hybrid Le Mans prototype begun yesterday at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit.

The latest version of the 4.4-litre engine at the heart of the X6 xDrive50i increases the predecessor model’s maximum output by 10 percent, to 450 bhp (+43 bhp), yet posts a 22 percent drop in average fuel consumption. The engine’s suite of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology now welcomes Valvetronic variable valve timing alongside its two turbochargers and High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, endowing the eight-cylinder engine with improved responsiveness and pulling power and also giving it extra efficiency.

Alas, BMW hasn’t made any mention of engine options or vehicle dynamics or anything at all to do with actual driving — the X4 is for now still officially a Concept, intended to show how the production version will look. Looking at the X3 though, engine options should be carried over directly. That means the turbocharged four and six cylinders as found in the xDrive20i, 28i, and 35i.

Porsche Launches Turbo S And Hybrid Models for Its Panamera

Stuttgart Auto, distributors of Porsche in Singapore launched two new Porsche Panamera variants, the Panamera S Hybrid and the Panamera Turbo S at the Pavilion at Customs House yesterday.

At the flag it was Andrea Piccini who took the first win for the No. 4 Hexis AMR Aston Martin DB9, taking the lead in the Driver's Championship for himself and Christian Hohenadel in the process. Hohenadel and Piccini now have 61 points to Marc Basseng's and Markus Winkelhock on 57. Darren Turner and Stefan MÃ¼cke are third on 56 points. The result also means Hexis AMR extend their lead in the Team Championship to 17 points over All-Inkl.com MÃ¼nnich Motorsport.

Sachsenring To Host German Round Of The FIA GT1 World Championship

The German round of the FIA GT1 World Championship has been confirmed and will take place at the 3.6km Sachsenring circuit, the home of the German MotoGP event, from 13 to 15 May 2011.

After a highly successful first season, the 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship will begin as it did in 2010, in Abu Dhabi at the end of March. As well as the event in the United Arab Emirates, the events in Algarve, Silverstone, Navarra, Paul Ricard and San Luis are all carried over from the inaugural season. The four new tracks on the 2011 calendar include Zolder (Belgium), Sachsenring (Germany) and Curitiba (Brazil), with the GT1 World Championship heading into new territory in September with a race in China, at the Ordos International Circuit.
