    Run For Miles

This is the French at their loony best, stuffing a big V6 into the rear of a tiny car. And what did they do with it after that? Thrash it round a track, of course!

    • Of course, Renault has done this before. Who can forget the utterly bonkers Renault 5 Turbo and two generations of Clio V6? In fact, it’s the rally-winning R5 Turbo that the Twin’Run pays homage to, with the “5” decal on the sides and the futuristic take on the rally car’s spotlights; only this time, LED technology has allowed the lights to be made just 25mm thick.
    • The interior is similarly race-inspired, although slightly plusher than most racing cars these days. Alcantara features on the doors, dashboard and padded Sparco seats, and the handbrake and gear levers are positioned up high, right next to the steering wheel. The instrument cluster is the most impressive, an oversized binnacle housing both a 5.5-in LED screen (with readouts for speed, revs, gears and various pressure readings), as well as a large starter button to the right, flanked by gauges for oil and water temperature.

As a car enthusiast in Singapore caged by endless rules and taxes, this news comes at a perfect time to give us hope and take our minds off the recent ridiculous trends in our car industry. If you'll excuse me, I've now got to start saving for my own trackday monster...
    • The biggest draw for trackday junkies (other than the very existence of the track)? The fact that the 5-6km track will be designed by Hermann Tilke, he of Yas Marina, Circuit of the Americas and Sepang fame. What makes this project even more interesting are the geographical features of the site, which includes elevation changes of up to 60m, prompting Tilke to liken it to some other famous tracks like Brands Hatch and even the Nurburgring's Nordschleife.
    • Apart from the main circuit, which will be lit to allow for the possibility of night races, the facility will also contain a CIK-certified kart track, off-road course and areas for advanced driving schools and driver training. Supplementing the different tracks will be various dealerships and test facilities for manufacturers, and workshops for repairs and tuning companies. To appeal more to enthusiasts, there are also plans to make it more family-friendly, with hotels, weekend homes, F&B and retail outlets, and a museum. There will also be bonded garages and storage space for collectors to keep not only their trackday and race machines, but also classic cars that can be used on the roads Malaysia once their COEs in Singapore expire. On a personal note, this last bit is a fantastic idea, because I find it one of the biggest shames that owners have to let go of their beloved rides at the end of every COE cycle, with many beautiful and beautifully kept cars getting exported or worse, scrapped.

Sure, with an A5, you can brag to all your friends that you have an Audi, and granted, the Vauxhall/Opel Badge is not as desirable as an Audi one. But which do you prefer? • The Cascada is based on a mixture of the Astra and Insignia platforms, but the fit and finish of the car is far removed from its modest roots. It is slated to be the most luxurious model in Vauxhall’s line-up. To achieve this, the Vauxhall designers have used elegant, flowing creases on the exterior to give the car a more upmarket look. The smooth, flowing lines fit in well with a tided up Astra front and rear end, making the entire package a smart looking one.
    • To match the exterior, Vauxhall has ditched the vinyl and plastic of the past and adopted the use of high-quality leather to upholster the seats and double-stitched soft-touch materials on the dashboard.

    • Seated in the well-appointed interior and grabbing the new flat-bottom steering wheel, I'm reminded once again that this is a completely new model. Play around with the new touch-screen infotainment system and like me, you'll be completely impressed with what it can do. Aside from providing audio pleasure and assimilating a slick new navigation system, it also allows you to control the car's driving modes. You can select from a full range of settings that include Comfort, Eco, Sport, and even an Individual mode that allows you to input your preferences. Let's just stick to 'Sport' (what else?). I just wished that the 'buttons' had some graphics to go with it, currently they are just plain white empty boxes.

    • With better a better intake of air comes better performance ability. The car’s powerplant is likely to be a 2.0 liter TDI, which produces 190 front wheel bhps. The diesel powerplant is paired up with batteries and two electric motors. Upon request, there is a 54 bhp electric motor to support the front wheels and a another 114 bhp electric motor to work the rear wheels, essentially turning it into a 4x4. In total, this car would have a combined 305 bhp and 700Nm of torque. The car’s century sprint time is 7.2 seconds. That isn’t exactly fast, but bearing in mind this is a Hybrid SUV, that figure is actually quite impressive. Fuel economy is good too. In hybrid mode, the car can achieve 14km for every litre of fuel. Estimated combined cycle fuel consumption is 2.1 liters per 100 km. The car can also be used as a pure diesel or a pure EV.
    • Inside the cockpit, there is ample space for maximum comfort. The car is very spacious, and has seating for six. In the back, air vents are integrated in the roof liner to ensure every passenger is cool. There is no lack of screens; two Ipad Minis are embedded in the backs of the headrests so that passengers in the middle row can be kept amused. A big screen in the centre of the dashboard allows for easy viewing of the satnav. The interior is dripping with cream leather, with bits of piano black accents and wood trim to liven up the interior.

    • As an alternative to the standard bi-xenon light, the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M are the first vehicles in their respective segments to be fitted standard with adaptive LED headlamps. Their bright white light ensures optimum visibility, while their high-quality appearance represents a new interpretation of the brand's hallmark twin circular headlamps. The three dimensionally shaped luminous rings of the adaptive LED headlamps are strikingly levelled off both at the top and bottom and are overlaid at the upper edge by an LED-fed accent light. The light sources for low and high beam light are LED units positioned on a horizontal bar at its centre, feeding their light into the reflectors in front.
    • With the newly designed rear lights with LED technology, the powerfully shaped rear section of the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M also feature more intense styling. The rear lights are now two LED-fed light banks which create the brand's hallmark night design as a harmoniously glowing light mass. The fact that they are horizontally aligned and stretch far out to the sides emphasise both the width of the vehicle and the flowing transition between the side section and rear.
    • Other things remain largely the same, both the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are powered by a 4.4 V8 delivering 555 bhp, capable of accelerating to 100 km/h from standstill in 4.7 seconds - driven through BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
