Porsche's lap record for its Taycan Turbo S on the Nurburgring Nordschleife was 7 minutes and 7.55 seconds, set by Porsche development driver Lars Kern in August 2022 in a current-generation vehicle with the performance package. On 2 January 2024, Lars walloped his own lap time in a pre-series next-generation Taycan Turbo S by an eye-watering 26 seconds, making this the fastest electric car from Zuffenhausen!

I mean, when else are you offered a chance to take a Porsche out on some stunning B-roads? And that was when I laid eyes on the Sport Classic, sitting pretty on the driveway. The Sport Classic is a model that was launched where I’m from (Singapore). However, because it is a limited edition model, there was never going to be a test drive unit offered for us. With each costing a cool SGD$1.5 million too, it’s not hard to see why.

Category A COE cars are all the rage these days in Singapore. With soaring petrol prices and astronomical COE premiums, these wallet-friendly city runabouts are just the sort of thing a budget-conscious buyer wants - practical, fuel-efficient, and versatile. For those of you reading outside of Singapore, here’s how we classify Cat A vehicles being registered here: - Non-fully electric cars with engines up to 1,600cc and Maximum Power Output up to 97kW (130bhp). - Fully electric cars with Maximum Power Output of up to 110kW (147bhp). However, as we can see from the figures above, in traditional cases owning a Cat A vehicle means sacrificing performance and oftentimes driving fun in exchange for a cheaper set of wheels. But, with the advent and advancement in new engine technology alongside innovations like electrical assistance, engine capacity is no longer the defacto indicator of performance.

Peugeot is the first mainstream car manufacturer to join the series after a sweeping revamp of the technical regulations, and made its competition return this weekend at the 6 Hours of Monza, the 4th round in the 6-race 2022 WEC season. Its weapon of choice? The new 9X8 Hypercar. Here’s a video of its very first lap in action: It was initially hoped that the 9X8 could make its live debut at the 2022 Le Mans 24h, but the newly-formed Team Peugeot TotalEnergies elected to skip that and instead focus on further testing to ensure the car’s race-readiness. This included a 15,000km test session and a marathon 36-hour endurance run to put the crew and their processes through their paces before wading into battle.

Factor in the current COE price of $82k and the M340i comes within striking distance of the $376,581 Audi S4, also an all-wheel drive 3-litre turbocharged sport sedan that makes 353hp and 500Nm of torque. Altogether, that’s good for an electronically-limited 250km/h top speed and 4.7 second sprint from 0-100km/h. Compelling? Moreover, even though it still sports a straight-6 turbo engine, the M340i is now available in Singapore only with all-wheel drive, or xDrive as BMW calls it. Cue moans and groans from hardcore BMW enthusiasts. Since the regular G20 has already been covered in a previous article, we’ll simply focus on what makes this an M Performance vehicle. The Important Bits The M340i features bulging intakes up front, which sets it apart from the regular 3er and makes that front-end look sharper and meaner. Don’t be deceived by those slim headlights though – they’re up there with the best that we‘ve tested.

For that, we have to look at Extreme Performance tyres, and one of the most venerable and popular examples in this segment is Yokohama’s Advan Neova range. Yokohama has just revealed the latest addition to this family, the new AD09, which is due to go on sale in Japan in Feb 2022, before “gradually being expanded to Asia and North America”. Unfortunately, no launch dates have been set for markets other than Japan, according to Yokohama’s official dealer in Singapore, YHI Automotive.

Random dinnertime banter very quickly turned into a 3,700 kilometre roadtrip... in a classic German luxobarge.


So, when an email popped into my inbox with the keywords 'cross-border', memories of the good old days - i.e. 2019 - came flooding back. A cross-country network. Turns out, the email wasn’t from the Government announcing border re-openings. Instead, it was the good folks at Porsche and Shell, announcing their EV charging network that spans Singapore and Malaysia.
