  • Let’s talk about the exterior. Visually, the car looks pretty much the same as the standard E class. But squint a bit harder, and you will notice that the car is slightly longer, gaining 140 mm of rear legroom. To make sitting in the rear even more comfortable, the front passenger seat can be electronically adjusted from the rear passenger area. Currently, the car is confined to China only. Various trim levels are available. The launch car shown at the show is called the Sport Sedan version and has been fitted with a more aggressive looking front end with a big three pointed star on the grille. If you want something classier, you may opt for the Sedan trim, which ditches the large grille-mounted badge for one standing on the bonnet. The low-beam headlamps are LEDs as standard.

    • The E class has always been Mercedes’ solution to provide a relatively affordable (limousine for those who want the comfort, quality and luxury of a Mercedes, and yet not pay so much for an S-class. Not too much more expensive than the standard E, but with a lot more legroom. Want an E-class limo but don’t want to get one made by an aftermarket specialist? Well, the E-class L is the perfect solution. It’s a shame we’re not going to get it.

The Baby Benz Grows Up | Mercedes-Benz A200 Urban

Mercedes-Benz calls it the “rebel” of the family. Like most rebels, they may have some traits that you'll admire about them, but most prove to be very hard to live with.

    • With that, Mercedes decided to eschew the upright mini-MPV look and tackle the Audi A3 and BMW 1-series head-on. This means a conventional front-engined hatchback with a choice of 2 turbocharged four-pots sending power to the front wheels. In our case, we have the 156 bhp A200 Urban, the sportier variant of the 1.6l engine.
    • If there’s one aspect the new baby Benz excels, it’s in its styling. It looks squat and purposeful, with some neat touches like the gloss black front valance and wing mirrors. Surprisingly for a small car, this is also the most successful interpretation of Mercedes’ new wide, two-bar grille, certainly much better integrated than on the SL and CLS. Others have found the styling too fussy, with too many creases and lines all over the place, but I like it. It does, however, need large rims to complete the look, and the 18-inchers on our test car fill out the wheelarches perfectly.

    • Before you start wondering where we took the first two shots you see here, I would like to admit that they are not 'real' photos. Well they are technically–they're actually a combination of three photos. I didn't have much of a choice really, it was raining cats and dogs during the time I had the car, so I had to be creative, literally. What is NOT fake though, is how good this car looks. At the front, nothing much has changed, but the three-quarter view is now beefier as the lines towards the back flow to a bulkier finish.
    • But the rear end is where this baby really hits the spot. While the sedan version is a little messy at the back, the Shooting Brake manages to blend the lines cohesively and I dare say, perfectly. While I'm not a fan of the colour, I must admit that matt paint finishes are starting to grow on me. Still, a CLS Shooting Brake is best finished in a shiny metallic gunmetal shade, or maybe white (like the AMG CLS 63 Shooting Brake - go Google that!).

In response to requests from many customers, the sitting position is now more upright. However at the same time, the headroom has been further improved: with a maximum headroom of 1,047 mm at the front (without sliding roof), the B-Class is among the most spacious cars in its segment in this discipline too.

    • The ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY petrol-engine model delivers a convincing performance thanks to the technical details of the new BlueDIRECT engine generation. The key here is the third-generation direct petrol injection system with spray-guided combustion and new piezo injectors that have an injection pressure of 200 bar, together with multi-spark ignition (MSI) and a new stratified combustion process. In this case, the NEDC consumption of 8.5 l/100 km is 25 percent lower than that of the previous ML 350 4MATIC model. The ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY meets the requirements of the EU5 standard, currently the strictest standard in force for petrol models.
    • Even the standard version of the new M-Class offers a high level of comfort, dynamic on-road handling and outstanding off-road capabilities. For the first time, the M-Class chassis with steel suspension features selective damping. The driver is assisted by electric steering, which ensures the optimum level of steering assistance for the current driving situation. In addition to this, the SUV impresses with the smallest turning circle in its market segment.

Once you have settled yourself into the snug seats, you will be looking at a very clean-cut dashboard with easy-to-understand instruments and displays. Yes, the centre console looks a bit busy with all the buttons, but that means you have less to bungle for the basic operations.

The rear legroom is pretty average and the sloping roof line does eat into the headroom for those in the rear and makes rear entries a little less dignified. However, those getting into the back will appreciate the front seats that automatically slide forward when you tilt them.

For the first time AMG is using a sports exhaust system featuring an exhaust flap on each side. At low loads and engine speeds below 2000 rpm the flaps remain closed. • Points’ leader Bruno Spengler with the AMG Mercedes C-Class finished second in the first foreign round of the current DTM season. Spengler started from pole position, but lost his first place after the first of two mandatory pit stops. At the finish, he just stayed ahead of third-placed Martin Tomczyk with his Audi A4 DTM in a fascinating battle. “Unfortunately, we have given victory away. Up to the first stop, the pace was good and I was able to pull clear from Mike. After the stop, however, Mike was ahead of me and wasn’t able to follow him anymore. Nevertheless, it isn’t a bad day. Finishing second at Zandvoort is something I haven’t achieved so far”, said Spengler, who won the season opener at Hockenheim and was able to extend his points’ lead in the overall standings.

    • The sides of the roadster are robustly built, not primarily for crash protection, but also to enhance the driving dynamics. Together with a beefed up cross-member with additional supporting struts at the windscreen frame, centre tunnel and between the soft top and the fuel tank, this makes the car very rigid.
    • The extra rigidity also allows the soft top to be opened or closed while on the move at up to 50 km/h. Overall, the only disadvantage the roadster has is an additional two kilograms of weight added to it's bodyshell compared to the coupe version.
    • Due to the omission of a solid roof, a reinforcing cross-member which supports the fixed rollover protection system, is installed behind the seats. The three-layered fabric soft top of the SLS AMG Roadster, which is deposited behind the seats in a Z-formation to save space, is designed for a maximum speed of 317 km/h. Roof down, a new push-on glass draught stopper and the panelling in the interior helps to keep roof down motoring an enjoyable experience.
