  • Sit yourself inside the Cayman, and you'll find that this is one sports car that is easy to get comfortable in. It may be low slung, but the seats are comfortable and visibility all round is excellent. Materials used in the cabin are of high quality - what else would you expect from the Germans. That being said, the Boxster S we have in our company stable is starting to show signs or wear, even the plastic areas we hardly come into contact with are beginning to scratch off. No chance of a long term test with this Cayman though, so we wouldn't know how it's interior will stand the test of time.

So Good It Hurts | Porsche Cayman 2.7 PDK

The new Porsche Cayman is seriously good. In fact, it's definitely the best drive I've had this year so far. So why am I still missing the previous one?

    • The sitting position is great too, and the new steering wheel is nicely sized. I did wish it had the sports steering wheel with the paddle-shifters though. This one is a bit confusing - if you're used to pulling left to downshift and pulling right to upshift (like the sport wheel does), the buttons on this wheel might throw you off a bit, as they don't do that. Instead, you push either one down to downshift, and pull the ones behind to upshift. I find it odd how one company has two methods to do the same thing. Anyway, the PDK is still an awesome gearbox. Phenomenally quick and robust with every gear change, it's one of the nice things about the Cayman. Although I really wouldn't mind trying a manual 'box too.
    • Which brings me to the bit about sports cars and technology. Sure, the automotive world has benefitted in a huge way because of technology. Cars are faster, more efficient and more effective now because of advancement in technology. But how far is too far? The electrically assisted steering in the new Cayman is once such example. Other journalists who have had the opportunity to drive the Cayman earlier have claimed that it offers the best of both worlds. Analogue meets electric - and they both hit it off. I beg to differ. It still feels fake and simulated. I reckon its because nothing can replace real feedback. Duh!
  • The new car boasts 450 bhp from an all new LT1 GM V8, making it the most powerful ‘base model’ corvette of all time. It also has 65Nm more low-end torque than the outgoing model. • At first glance, the Ghost seems like it is similarly sized to its elder sibling the Phantom, but upon closer inspection, it’s not that far off the perennial favourite, which is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The exterior retains the Phantom’s basic shape, but on the Ghost, some curves were added for more style. Those headlamps, which also get LED daytime running lights, makes the car more distinctive, ensuring everyone gets out of its way in the fastest lane of the expressway. The Spirit of Ecstasy sits proudly on the tip of the bonnet as well, but it can be hidden at the touch of a button.
    • In comparison to the S Class, the Ghost is three percent longer, wider and taller. Its 3,295 mm wheelbase is also some 130 mm longer than the S 600L - which translates to a very spacious cabin. Speaking of cabin, the wide-opening coach doors welcomes you to a world of class, sophistication and luxury all rolled into one – so you will always remember that you are in a Rolls-Royce, no less. The ventilated seats hug you snugly to the point that it makes you feel as if you are right at home, after adjusting it to your preferred position, and to top it off, you get an LCD screen ahead of you (yes, you can watch TV on the move), plus individual air-con and audio controls. Yet this spectacular new development is unmistakably recognisable as a member of the BMW M3 model family.
    • Corroborating this kinship are not just the inimitable power of the engine, but also fine-tuned aerodynamics and a tailored suspension set-up. Measurements in the wind tunnel at the BMW Group's Aerodynamic Test Centre showed a Cd factor on a par with that of the BMW M3 Coupé. Like every BMW M model, the BMW M3 Pickup has also demonstrated its dynamic potential on the North Loop of the Nürburgring. Official lap times have not yet been released, but the needle in the dial vouched for a top speed of 300 km/h.
    • The kerb weight of the world's fastest pickup undercuts that of the BMW M3 Convertible by around 50 kg. Removing the Targa roof shaves off a further 20 kg while at the same time lowering the car's centre of gravity. This most unusual experience of top-down driving pleasure in a BMW M3 thus goes hand in hand with further optimised dynamic handling.

This juxtaposition of simple and complex is a common trait of many traditional Korean art and craft. Asian Celadon-style pottery, in particular, was a major influence on the car’s styling – with the pottery’s asymmetric form lending itself to the sunroof design, and the typical jade coloring giving Naimo its unique exterior finish. Kia’s design team also made use of innovative technology features to give the car a premium feel and to ensure the car’s exterior remained uncluttered. For example, Naimo has no traditional wiper blade on the windscreen – instead it employs a high-intensity air jet at the base of the windscreen that performs an ‘air wiper’ function. Conventional door mirrors have also been replaced with miniature cameras installed in the A-pillars.

Alongside these traditional elements sit modern features such as a TOLED (transparent organic light emitting diode) storming display instrument panel and full device connectivity. “Naimo is a perfect balance of innovation, high-tech and Korean tradition. It was heavily inspired by the purity and grace of traditional Korean arts and crafts, but combines this with cutting edge technologies to deliver a truly premium experience,” comments Kia Motors’ Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer.
    • The third electric vehicle design to be unveiled by Kia Motors Corporation in a year, the 3.9 metre long Naimo concept explores the practicalities of introducing a zero-emissions, five-door, four-seater city car into a future niche market. Measuring 3,890 mm in length, the Naimo’s generous wheelbase, width and height (2,647, 1,844 and 1,589 mm respectively) – plus the short overhangs which place a wheel at each corner – ensure that the cabin provides exceptional head, leg and shoulder room for the occupants. The concept car has no B-pillars and features rear-hinged rear doors to maximize easy access to the cabin, and a three-way split opening trunk, allows versatile access to the load bay for varying luggage sizes.

If you wonder why they have decided to use the first two alphabets of the two Italian towns, well the reason is simply because the car was designed in (cue Italian accent) Milan and assembled in Torino. As you can see, the MiTo has the soul and basis of an Alfa Romeo, thanks to the pronounced nose-like front grill and strong cues of the previous 147. I have no doubt that Richard Hammond would have driven over 270km/h on it in one piece without crashing the airfield. He knows anything that hits 0-100km/h in four sub seconds should be driven safely, considering that it weighs lighter than a Ferrari Enzo FXX and just over a hundred kilogrammes heavier than a certain Rolls Royce Orpheus powered jet car.
  • From the diagram above, we can now see why Car One is more likely than Car Two to hit X and this hypothesis is taken with the assumption that the driver has a normal average reaction time. If the driver is distracted or driving under the influence of alcohol, then he or she will have a longer than average reaction time to knock X down without having any chance of applying brakes at all.

    The Dangers Of Speeding

Have you ever wondered why speed traps and covert operations conducted by the Traffic Police are in place? That is because inappropriate speed is a danger on public roads.

Many of us deceive ourselves when driving. Often one would reckon that while the speed limit is capped at 60 km/h, ... MORE

    • So what is the relationship between the variables of the increased chances of being involved in a fatal accident per the increase of speed? One factor for this is reaction time, which is the time taken by a person to perceive danger and his or her reaction to it. Consider this hypothesis: Two cars of equal weight and braking ability are travelling along the same road. Car One is travelling at 65 km/h and is overtaking Car Two, which is travelling at 60 km/h. An independent variable which is a child on a bicycle named X emerges all of a sudden from a driveway just as the two cars are side-by-side. The drivers both see X at the same time and both take 1.5 seconds before they fully apply the brakes. In those few moments, Car One travels 27.1 metres and Car Two travels 25 metres. The difference of 2.1 metres might seem insignificant, but combined with the other variables it could mean the difference between X cycling down the street to his favourite candy store or being plastered to the tarmac in a bloody mess.
    • The figure of 1.5 seconds is the reaction time of an average driver. A driver who is distracted by various elements such as listening to loud music, using a mobile phone or driving under the influence of alcohol may take as long as three seconds or more to react. The second variable is the braking distance which is the distance a car travels before stopping when the brakes are applied. This is also dependent on numerous factors, for example the gradient of the road is important, as a car will retard its speed faster if it is going uphill due to gravitational pull coupled with the car’s weight. Next, the frictional resistance between the road and the car's tyres is also important. A car with new tyres on a dry road will be less likely to skid and will stop more quickly than one with worn out treads on a wet road, which is very bad. If the fore mentioned two factors are ceteris paribus, the determining factor that has the most influence on braking distance is the initial speed of the cars.

    • Cars and women are like big ticket items and one needs to choose carefully before taking the plunge, because the only thing that is going up are the COE prices not the wads of cash in your wallet. But then, there are some cars that simply defy logic and make one lose his rationale and the Peugeot RCZ happens to be one those cars, an automotive manifestation of Mélissa Theuriau with design curves inspired by Carla Bruni. In fact this car is akin to owning a trophy wife or mistress on wheels, whichever is applicable. Monsieur Sarkozy should know best…
