Pioneer Leads The Car Audio Game With Unparalleled Connectivity

It's been about 2 weeks since I've had the Pioneer AVH-X8550BT multimedia receiver in my car, and all I can say is that it's a pretty amazing piece of kit.

Music plays a large part of my life. Simply put, I can't live without it. Whether I'm cleaning up the house, working on my photos ... MORE

    • But the real clincher for this unit is its connectivity. It offers full capabilities for hooking up with your iPhone (even the latest iPhone5 which I'm using), and up to 40 Android smartphones from major brands like HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. With my iPhone, I'm able to connect directly via a HDMI cable and run apps developed by Pioneer directly on the head unit! These include music, media and navigation apps - which I will elaborate on in my next review article.
    • For now, I am enjoying the new found power that the AVH-X8550BT is producing. With no change to my speakers at all, the MOSFET 50W x 4 channel built-in amp is improving the sound quality by leaps and bounds. Music never sounded so good in this car before! Coupled with a cool Auto EQ feature, I can tune the sound to my preferred taste just by tapping on the screen, or simply pressing it in a wave motion from one end to another of the frequency range - so cool!

    • Exotic materials abound all over the car. Not only does it have a carbonfibre bonnet, roof and bootlid, even parts of the body in white are made from the stuff – the rear end, central tunnel and B pillars. With the floor and hinges made of magnesium, about 100kg has been shaved from the car’s body.
    • In an effort to further improve the ride and handling, a lot of focus has also been placed on reducing unsprung mass. Or course, there are your obligatory carbon-ceramic brakes, but then there are also other innovations like fiberglass-reinforced plastic springs, as well as special, 20kg-lighter wheels, with aluminium spokes bolted to a carbonfibre rim.

    • But we're not in an R8 today. We're in the family car actually, a really, really fast one. Audi is arguably the master of fast estates, or 'Avant', as they would call it. Beginning with the RS 2 Avant which they developed with a joint venture with Porsche, they've been building ferocious wolves in sheep's clothing for the past 10 years.

Inside, leather has been spread just about everywhere. Not only that, the leather helps tie in with the futuristic looking centre console, which finishes with a BMW-like gearstick. Only the finest-quality hides will be used, supplied by Italian specialist Poltrona Frau. There is also an optional Bowers & Wilkins system for any audiophiles out there.

If you prefer petrol power, Maserati\'s turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine will be available in two states of tune. The top of the line Ghibli S will develop 410bhp and sprint from a standstill to 100km/h in just 5.0sec, and continue ploughing along until it hits 285 km/h. A V8 petrol is expected to follow at a later date. All engines will be coupled with a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters.

To put the power to the ground, the engine is coupled to a 7 speed automated manual transmission and permanent all-wheel-drive. With very little styling differences, the Hybrid looks just like any other A6, save the new wheels (why do hybrid wheel design always mimic a turbine or a fan?) and some emblems. That said, the A6 has always been a handsome car, if not particularly striking. An E-Class or a 5 Series still commands more presence on the road.

    • At low to medium loads and engine speeds, cylinders 2, 3, 5 and 8 are deactivates by closing their valves via electromechanical actuators. The engine runs as a four-cylinder engine until the driver accelerates more strongly again. The operations take so little time and occur so smoothly and quickly that they can barely be felt or heard. This technology reduces fuel consumption figures by roughly five percent, and even greater savings of approximately 10 percent are possible when driving at moderate speeds.

But the supercharger does brings on the power at a low enough rev range for the car to pick up the pace almost instantaneously. • The A1 Sportback is no botch, cut and paste job though; quite some work went into it. To begin with, it stands 6 mm higher and wider than the 3-door variant. Of course, the additional sheet metal also made this upsized A1 25 kg heavier too. Exterior wise, there isn’t much giveaway to let pedestrians know ‘I-am-driving-a-bigger-small-car’ though – that is, until you get to take a look at it from the rear three quarter.

    • The Audi A6 hybrid can drive at up to 100 km/h purely on electric power and has a range of three kilometers at a constant 60 km/h. It can also drive using the combustion engine alone or in hybrid mode.
    • The hybrid sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 240 km/h. Standard fuel consumption is less than 6.2 liters per 100 km, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of less than 145 gm/km.
    • The lightweight and compact lithium-ion battery is located in a crash-proof area in the trunk. It provides 1.3 kWh of nominal energy and 40 kW of power. Two different methods are used to air cool the battery, depending on need, with air blown from the passenger compartment by a fan and via a separate cooling circuit coupled to the deluxe automatic air conditioning system. This technology keeps the battery within the suitable temperature window over a broad range, ensuring a relatively large proportion of electric driving.
  • The star of the event is of course the new SUV, which looks every bit an Audi. Sporting Audi's signature LED wedge-shaped headlights and a handsome mini-Q5 look, the soft-roader oozes quality inside and out.

  • To ensure the tyre was appropriate for European roads and climate, Falken used its engineering team based in Frankfurt to develop the specification. In addition to testing on European public roads and private proving grounds, engineers also gained feedback from Falken’s racing drivers at the Nürburgring who tested the tyres. The resulting “NUR-Spec” design incorporates a more warp resistant casing and additional nylon-reinforced cover ply to increase high-speed stability. This construction is complemented by a rounder tyre shoulder, optimising pressure deployment on the tread area.

This construction is complemented by a rounder tyre shoulder, optimising pressure deployment on the tread area.
    • In contrast to the previous FK452, dry handling has been improved by 25 percent whilst handling on wet surfaces is enhanced by 30 percent, delivering useful gains in control for lane changes and higher speed cornering. A combination of tread pattern and compound changes has led to an eight percent reduction over the FK452 in braking distances on wet surfaces. To break the water film and deflect the water more effectively than conventional tread patterns, Falken has implemented three central tread grooves and staggered sipes integrated into the first tread bar on the tyre shoulder. In line with its other new products such as the ZE914, Falken has increased the silica proportion. The strain characteristics of silica offer a larger contact area and better grip for the same tyre diameter, resulting in stronger interaction with the road surface.
    • To achieve the lower noise levels now expected by consumers, even those running low profile tyres, Falken introduced phase-shifted tread bars. The rounder shoulder contributes to the significantly lower rolling and pass-by noise. The new Azenis FK453 range will comprise 62 different sizes (25 to 50 series), making it applicable for a significant number of cars.
