The 488 Pista Spider sets a new benchmark for Ferrari, for spider performance, made possible thanks to the adoption of the most powerful Ferrari V8 engine ever which was recently named Best Engine in the World for the third consecutive year at the 2018 International Engine of the Year awards. The 3,902 cc twin-turbo V8 unleashes 710 bhp @ 8,000 rpm/770 Nm @ 3,000 rpm and combines that power with increasing torque at all engine speeds for continuous and unending acceleration all the way to the redline. Standstill to 100 km/h takes 2.85 seconds, while 0-200 km/h needs only 8 seconds; maximum speed is rated at 340 km/h.

The iconic Estoril track is 4.2 km long with two hairpins, a difficult chicane and a very long main straight, which means drivers experience an unusually broad range of speeds over one lap. It therefore rewards cars with a great breadth of ability, that combine fast acceleration with exceptional handling. Speaking about the benchmark time, Tiago Monteiro said, “We came here with a goal to beat the existing lap record set by the previous car but you can never take anything for granted — I mean it’s a lap record so it’s no easy feat. You have to have supreme confidence in the car to attack around Estoril, and the new Type R is just so powerful, smooth and confidence-inspiring. We beat the lap record, smashed the record actually.”

And majestic it truly was. A short 10 minutes drive from the resort, we — ok, the X3 — climbed up all the way to the Seruni Point lookout point. Yes, most of the stock photos of the famed Mount Bromo sunrise you find online were taken at this exact spot. And how can I forget? Standing at the highest lookout point, you could also catch the moon in all its glory along with the Milky Way — I kid you not — here. If I may, this has to be one of the glorious views I’ve ever experienced hence now I understand why Mount Bromo attract visitors by the droves.

But to me, this ‘middle-class’ fast SUV is already hot enough. For starters, it features a tuned B58 unit, a turbocharged 3.0 liter inline-six engine already found in the M240i. With the M DCT ‘box, the M2 Competition completes a standard standstill to 100 km/h sprint in 4.2 seconds (4.4 seconds with a 6-speed manual) - not that far off the Porsche 911 Carrera S (PDK) which needs 3.9 seconds, just for comparison’s sake. Top speed has been electronically limited to 250 km/h; but surprise, surprise, the car can be combined with the M Driver’s Package to raise the top speed to 280 km/h.
