It wasn’t until two years later that the name “Andrew Tang” would become prominent. This was when he became champion of the 2014 Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, becoming the first non-Kiwi ever to do so. Sadly, his rapid rise up the ranks was curtailed by National Service, but he’s since bounced back from that setback, having been picked up by the Porsche China Junior Team in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, where he’s currently lying 3rd in the Championship, with two race wins under his belt. We caught up with him recently to try and dig deeper and find the driving force behind Singapore’s latest driving prodigy.

The runs were carried out at Skellefteå Drive Center, a former airfield just outside Skellefteå in northern Sweden. The truck covered the distance in both directions; based on these two runs, the average time and speed were calculated. The record result the FIA presented is the average speed of the two runs.

One key difference between the Coupe and Spyder R8 models is of course the lightweight, fully automated cloth hood, which can be activated at speeds of up to 50 km/h, and is slickly concealed beneath the sculpted integral cover - it takes just 20 seconds for the roof to be activated. The rear window can also be retracted and extended at the touch of a button.

Anyway out on the expressway, the Clubman behaves in a very gentlemanly manner with the engine spinning below 2,500 rpm at 100 km/h — which means engine noise is barely intruding. ALPINA has also invested considerable expertise in the engine. The highly-responsive, direct injection V8 uses two specially-developed twin-scroll turbochargers located between the cylinder banks, operating in parallel to deliver up to 1.2-bar with minimum inertia. An indirect intercooler system (air/water/air) further improves both power and responsiveness, with a main intercooler feeding the two large-volume close-coupled intercoolers. First impressions of the GS F can be polarizing, with the sharp lines of standard GS enhanced by a gaping front maw with a mesh grille and vented fenders flowing into swooping side skirts, as well as a diffuser, quad pipes and a carbon-fiber lip spoiler out back. The front and rear light clusters have also been redesigned. While some may find it overkill, this writer finds the enhancements well suited to the GS shape, adding a good dose of presence.

For now though, early adopters of the RX Turbo won’t be missing out on much, as they’ll still enjoy the same improvements and changes made to the rest of the car. First up is the exterior styling — the radical new look is more in line with the company’s new styling direction. From the oversized Spindle grille to the LED light clusters to the sharp origami-like creases in the sheet metal, the styling of the new RX screams aggression, with nary a curve to be found.

BP — The previous 3 generations of MX-5 had a design that was quite cute, rounded and smiley, which clearly evolved over the years. Why then did the ND's styling suddenly change to something quite aggressive and angry? Nakayama — Of course, compared to the previous generations, the design is more aggressive, but I personally believe the most important thing is not how it compares to the older cars. When you look at the car without prior knowledge about the previous models, whether it is beautiful or aggressive or not, is not the most important thing. I believe that when we introduced the first-generation model, among all the players in the industry, car design had certain tendencies. So maybe every player had a much more pretty or softer face. But now, so many players have a much more aggressive face and complex design. So I think that compared to the other players today, the design is not that aggressive.
