Starting from the back of the grid, the No. 5 Matech Ford of Richard Westbrook was on the move early on, moving up four places in the first three laps and a further three places by lap 9 in his attempt to get ahead of the No. 1 Vitaphone Maserati of Andrea Bertolini. Bertolini was holding a points scoring position in ninth place, which became 10th when he was passed by the Triple H Team Hegersport Maserati of Daniel Serra.

The newest member of the mid-engined Cayman family features the highly efficient 3.4-litre, flat six-cylinder Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) boxer engine found in the Cayman S, but it has been tuned to produce an additional 10 hp. With a six-speed manual transmission, the Porsche Cayman R sprints from a stand-still to 62 mph in 5.0 seconds, two-tenths of a second faster than the Cayman S.

It was not simply a question of moving the transmission to the rear axle, the vehicle had to be adjusted and tuned in every element of its driving dynamics. This includes springs, dampers, stabilisers and even the tyres. The aerodynamics were also adjusted to take account of the change to the power flow. The rear axle differential, with a 45 percent limited slip, was also redeveloped, as was the calibration of the e-gear transmission. One significant point was the adjustments made to the ESP system. While the standard program is focused on high stability, the CORSA program permits greater drift angles, thus enabling drivers to enjoy the dynamics of the LP550-2 to their full extent.
