That’s where the S60 T8 R-Design comes in. It’s the most powerful Volvo you can buy today, with the sort of on-paper figures that might give warm sports saloons like the Audi S4, BMW M340i, and Mercedes-AMG C43 a right old scare: 402hp, 640Nm of torque and 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds. Except, the S60 doesn’t follow your traditional sports saloon recipe. It’s a plug-in hybrid you see, which means a twin-charged 315hp 2.0-litre engine driving the front wheels, and an 87hp electric motor powering the rears. And that, I’m afraid, is the S60’s undoing as a performance car.

Volvo Cars reveals the new S60 mid-size premium sports saloon at the company’s first US manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina


The exterior design shows BMW’s new styling language focusing on clarity, modernity and emotional engagement; a clear link to the BMW Concept 8 Series first unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in 2017. With exterior dimensions of 4,843 mm in length, 1,902 mm in width, 1,341 mm in height and a wheelbase of 2,822 mm, the two-door coupé definitely has presence on the roads. Additionally, the side view is dominated by dramatic surfaces: Whilst they curve inwards on the far side of the front wheels, they bulge outwards again in a real display of power above the rear wheels. The glass area tapers at the rear, accentuating the muscular shoulderline, while the side window graphic ends in a very tightly-angled version of the famous Hofmeister kink.

In the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 2018, BMW will be fielding two BMW M8 GTEs. These racing cars already demonstrated their potential at the season opener in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, and the US-American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. This will now be followed by the debut of the production model; drive and suspension will be based as close as possible to the M8 GTE. On that note, motor sport expertise is concentrated in particular in the new M850i xDrive Coupe, which BMW promises offers outstanding dynamic handling characteristics; it gets with it a new V8 engine, intelligent four-wheel drive, controlled rear axle differential lock, Integral Active Steering, adaptive M suspension technology Professional featuring Active Roll Stabilization and 20-inch light alloy wheels boasting high-performance tyres. “There isn’t a better setting for the world premiere of the new BMW 8 Series Coupe than the 24-hour race at Le Mans,” says Klaus Fröhlich, board member of the BMW AG, Development. “The race is a pure demonstration of passion, dynamics and long-distance capability. Of the nearly 126,000 vehicles registered worldwide, Ford reported 81,866 of those were registered in the United States where the Mustang is manufactured, meaning just over one-third of all Mustang registrations are occurring in export markets.
