It wasn’t until two years later that the name “Andrew Tang” would become prominent. This was when he became champion of the 2014 Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand, becoming the first non-Kiwi ever to do so. Sadly, his rapid rise up the ranks was curtailed by National Service, but he’s since bounced back from that setback, having been picked up by the Porsche China Junior Team in the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, where he’s currently lying 3rd in the Championship, with two race wins under his belt. We caught up with him recently to try and dig deeper and find the driving force behind Singapore’s latest driving prodigy.

Inaugurated in 2012, the R8 LMS Cup is Audi’s first single-make series, and also one of the most prestigious in Asia. Organised by Audi China, the 2016 season is held over six weekends and will visit the continent’s premier racetracks, including the Shanghai, Sepang and Korea F1 circuits. Like many other championships, the R8 LMS Cup features a diverse driver lineup, ranging from professional DTM, Endurance, GT and Touring Car racers (including Malaysian ex-F1 driver Alex Yoong) to passionate gentleman drivers who are in it just for the love of the sport.

Asia’s hottest one-make race series blazes into its 5th season with a brand new car, the 2nd gen R8 LMS. We catch up with the series in Sepang, Malaysia.


One key difference between the Coupe and Spyder R8 models is of course the lightweight, fully automated cloth hood, which can be activated at speeds of up to 50 km/h, and is slickly concealed beneath the sculpted integral cover - it takes just 20 seconds for the roof to be activated. The rear window can also be retracted and extended at the touch of a button.

The new headlights which look like it was directly lifted from the 458 Italia, makes the car immediately more striking. You can be excused if you think that the California is just another hardtop with pleasing lines. However, it is more than that. If you hit the switch and wait 14 seconds, you find that the touring model is actually a drop-top. The California is equipped with a retractable hardtop that quickly slips out of sight behind the passenger compartment. Thanks to its intelligent design, the stored hardtop doesn’t take too much away from trunk storage. For a sports car, there is a fair amount of storage space - easily enough to hold luggage for a weekend away.

Audi Sport TT Cup Premieres

The opening race of Audi's one-make cup at Hockenheim features some famous guest drivers; race is also part of the 2015 DTM Festival


From Zhuhai, the Cup heads to the Korea International Circuit in South Korea, prior to making its debut in Chinese Taipei, at the Penbay International Circuit. From there, the Cup travels to Malaysia in August, prior to marking another first for the series with two race weekends in support of the FIA World Endurance Championship. At Fuji from October 10 to 11 and at the Audi R8 LMS Cup season finale in Shanghai from October 31 to November 1, fans of the brand with the Four Rings will have a chance to see the Audi motorsport family unite, with the Cup and the Audi Sport WEC team racing alongside each other.

For the UK, the ST Cupra’s 2.0 TSI engine with dual injection and variable camshaft timing will be tuned to 280 bhp. The Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), front differential lock, progressive steering, Cupra Drive Profile and standard-fit full-LED headlights are further examples of its state-of-the-art technologies. The announcement of Loeb’s participation adds to the fevered anticipation building ahead of the Macau race, which sees the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia return to the Guia Circuit as part of the celebration of the 60th running of the Grand Prix. Loeb may be new to Macau’s 6.2km Guia street track, but he does have experience of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup both as a driver and a team boss in the Porsche Carrera Cup France, and on a city circuit. Earlier this year, Loeb made his debut at the pinnacle of Porsche one-make racing — the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, contesting both the Spanish and Monaco rounds. Having conquered the world of international rallying, Loeb has turned his remarkable talent to circuit racing. When he arrives in Asia, he will be met by a Porsche Carrera Cup Asia brimming with both experience professionals and young talent, several of whom have previous experience at Macau. All eyes will be on the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia this November to see whether the world’s most successful rally driver can beat his formidable rivals and conquer the Guia Circuit to take a coveted Macau victory.

Sébastien Loeb Confirmed For Macau Grand Prix Invitational

Porsche China has announced that nine-time FIA World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb will make his Porsche Carrera Cup Asia debut at the end-of-season invitational at the Macau Grand Prix.


Whatever awaits the field though, all will be out for victory, while eight have important championship matters to attend to as well. Counting as Round 10 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2013 season, the series’ 11th, sensational newcomer Earl Bamber of New Zealand tops the overall championship leader board heading to Singapore. With three rounds to go, the Nexus Racing driver has a slim 13 point advantage over Austrian Martin Ragginger of Team Eagle. Both have four victories to their names this season, and each has seen his share of bad luck, but the intense rivalry between the pair is a recipe for excitement.
