This took the pressure off Hoshino in the pole-starting car No. 3 and enabled him to build up a more than 10-second lead by the 10th lap of the race. The close dogfight for second place between the cars behind fell to an even slower pace as the GT500 leaders caught and passed them. The resulting string of GT300 cars caught behind second place allowed No. 3 (Hoshino) to run away in the lead. On the 29th lap, Hoshino brought his car No. 3 in for the routine pit stop. Before the start, the team had been considering a no-tyre-change strategy, but with a margin of lead this big, they were able to change all four tyres and send their second-stint driver, Masataka Yanagida, back onto the track in about 30 seconds. At this point, many teams had not yet made their pit stops, but when all had finished their pit stops by lap 35, No. 3 was in the lead again with a considerable margin. By the time the GT500 class had finished the race on their 53rd lap, the GT300 class was finishing on its 49th lap. For the No. 3 TOMICA Z team (Kazuki Hoshino/Masataka Yanagida) this was their first win of the season.

By the time racing resumed on the sixth lap, Webber was already back up to 10th as he swept past Timo Glock’s Virgin. At the front Alonso quickly regained his rhythm, holding Vettel at bay by 1.3 seconds as Hamilton maintained third and Button began to drift back in fourth place.

It has become evident that attempting to hold the race as scheduled under such conditions would not only be an imposition on the spectators attempting to come to the race, it could also seriously hinder the work of the local authorities and citizens to recover quickly from the typhoon damage. As such, the Oyama Town authorities has made a request to cancel the race.

For the No. 17 KEIHIN HSV-010, its first podium finish of the season was also its first victory. For the team and for Koudai Tsukakoshi, this was their first SUPER GT victory. Toshihiro Kaneishi has one victory in the All Star Race of 2004, but this is his first win in a series round. After having victory stolen out of their hands, the No. 18 Weider HSV-010 (Takashi Kogure/Loic Duval) team settled for a disappointing second. Finishing third was the No. 6 ENEOS SC430 (Daisuke Ito/Bjorn Wirdheim). Staring from eighth position on the grid, the first-stint driver, Wirdheim had managed to avoid the early confusion and move up through the pack. Over the second half of the race, his teammate Ito had been able to hold pace and claim this podium finish. With this finish, Ito and Wirdheim remains top in the rankings.

This competition has been running in Europe since 1985 and the United States since 2007 and the objective of the competition is to challenge students to design, build and drive a vehicle that can travel the furthest distance on the least amount of fuel.

The track was designed by the world-renowned Hermann Tilke, and incorporates local elements such as the roof of the main grandstand which resembles the eaves of traditional Korean ‘hanok’ houses. A total of 130,000 spectators will be accommodated at the circuit, with 16,000 seats in the main grandstand. The addition of the 2010 FORMULA 1 KOREAN GRAND PRIX to the FIA Formula One World Championship calendar is expected to represent a watershed for development of the motor sports industry in Korea, as well as bring economic benefits to the area.

Korea International Circuit On Track for Summer Completion

Construction of the Korea International Circuit, set to host the 2010 FORMULA 1 KOREAN GRAND PRIX from October 22-24, is on schedule for completion this summer.


This year's S1K was won by Team Ultra Racing - Kegani in a 1600cc Toyota Levin machine as it sensationally upstaged the higher powered 1800cc cars from the team's more illustrious opponents such as Type R Racing Team, JC Racing, Mofaz Racing and Pentagon J’s Racing from Class 1, proving that brute force is not everything in an endurance race. Driven by Kenny Lee, Chris O’Shannessy and Hsiao Tung Wei, the Class 2 trio took eight hours 32 minutes and 1.455 seconds to complete a gruelling 181 laps of the 5.543 kilometres Sepang International Circuit.
