Tomczyk Wins DTM Lausitzring, Takes Points' Lead

BY Krado Low

DTM fans had a treat over the weekend with great duels and numerous overtaking manoeuvres.

Having started from fourth place, the German crossed the finish line as the winner, adding on another victory onto his triumph at Spielberg. “My car was incredibly fast. Driving it was great fun. Finally, after six win-less years, we have defeated the Lausitzring’s demon. Being the points’ leader feels really great”, said Tomczyk.

Tomczyk’s fellow Audi driver Timo Scheider, the 2008 and 2009 DTM champion, completed the 1-2 win for Audi with two very late pit stop strategies. Scheider had started from ninth place and gradually worked his way up the field. Tom Kristensen replaced Mike Rockenfeller, who was recovering from the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He defended his seventh position from start to end.

Bruno Spengler was the best-placed Mercedes-Benz driver at Lausitz. The Canadian started from pole position, but failed to defend his top position and finished third. With a total of 29 points, Spengler is now in second on the drivers' standings with only one point behind Tomczyk.

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Sport said, “We have been chasing a victory here at Lausitzring for such a long time. For Martin and Timo, the performance and strategy during the race were fruitful. Admittedly, it is still a long way towards the title, but we have shown that we are there.”

Norbert Haug, head of Motorsport Mercedes-Benz said, “At Lausitzring, we have scored five victories in a row and that had to stop one day. Today, it certainly was a comparably poor race by us. However, that shouldn’t become the norm.”
