Shell Track Lab Visit

BY Keegan Gan

Burnpavement.com was invited by Shell to witness the 2010 Singtel Singapore Formula 1 GP up close and was brought around the track and general area.

Given exclusive entry to the paddock area, we were brought around by Shell’s Stuart Humm on a guided tour of the garage and how the pit crew work on various aspects of the race.

We were also introduced to the various Shell V-power personnel working in the Shell Track Lab such as Lisa Lilley (Shell Technology Manager) and her team of scientists.

Here at the Shell Track Lab, which is a state-of-the-art mobile fuel testing laboratory, we had the opportunity to learn more about the race fuels and Shell’s leading fuel research and analysis team for the Scuderia Ferrari.

Inside, scientific apparatus, testing equipment and computer monitoring hardware are manned by Lisa and her team of experts who test and analyse the fuels for its purity, cleanliness and chemical mix.

More than 40 tests are conducted by the Shell scientists per weekend on the Shell V-Power race fuel. Used in the cars, these specially concocted race fuels ensure that the drivers such as Fernando Alonso will be able to achieve peak performance within the FIA regulations at all times be it in practice, qualifying or during the race itself.
