2011 WRX grows some muscle

BY Burnpavement

The last incarnation of our favourite boxer-clad rally machine was a bit of a disappointment, missing all the flared-arch fenders and gaping air dams, the response to the GR WRX was lukewarm, at best.

It was an unforgivable sin that Subaru had committed. Making it's best-selling road rally performance car look like a run-of-the-mill Nissan Sunny. The only difference was a subtle air-scoop and a dual exhaust exit at the rear, which was hardly enough.

But Subaru have repented from their wicked ways and humbly confessed their wrong doings. The face-lifted GR WRX will have the flared arches enthusiasts missed dearly and will overall be beefed up in the looks department. The initial impressions are pretty good. But is it enough?

You be the judge.

Above base WRX will have current STi looks with augmented arches and large air-scoop.

STi version will have high rear spoiler and STi bespoke wheels. Which like generations of old, will soon have aftermarket variants available for base WRXs.

Side profile for sedan STi definitely exudes a more aggressive stance with the huge spoiler and more definition in its body lines.

Harder to tell the difference now. Current 5D STi owners better swap to an EVO if you don't want to end up looking like a 'regular' WRX.

Along with the wider looks, the track will be widen by 1.5" as well.

Rear still lacking some 'oomph'! We think it's the lights, they look too 'soft'.

Front end looking the part, especially in gunmetal grey or black.
