Lamborghini celebrates 60 years as an icon

BY Sean Loo

Automobili Lamborghini is filling its 60th anniversary with a full schedule of exhilarating events.

Sixty years ago, in a desolate area that was open countryside, construction of the Automobili Lamborghini factory began. The company was established on May 6, 1963, and Ferruccio Lamborghini’s lifelong dream of becoming a manufacturer of sports cars was now born.

Right from the start, Lamborghini and his very young engineers showed an immense passion for innovation and a desire to disrupt the dogmas of the sports car world. These values, which still form the cornerstone of the company today, would lead to the birth of legendary cars such as the Miura, Countach, Diablo, and Murcielago. Lamborghini literally invented the supercar.

Over the years, Lamborghini has continued to evolve, creating icons of epic style, technology and performance, while still rocking that same bonkers DNA that the company was founded upon.

Hence, for its 60th anniversary, Lamborghini is organising a series of events worldwide, each unique in their own right, but they all share the same purpose - To ignite and celebrate the passion for Lamborghini in everyone.

The 60th-anniversary celebrations began on January 19th with the opening of the remodelled Lamborghini Museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese. The museum was renovated and rearranged specially for the celebrations, even including an exhibition entitled ‘The Future Began In 1963’.

Next, Lamborghini Day Japan was held on February 23 in Suzuka, Japan. Hundreds of enthusiasts and collectors gathered in one giant spectacle to showcase an epic collection of cars. In the United Kingdom, Silverstone Circuit will be the venue for Lamborghini Day UK on April 29th, with over 300 Lamborghini owners expected to attend.

The next big upcoming event will be the 60° Anniversario Giro tour in Italy that will end on May 28th in the main square of Bologna. TItled Concorso in Piazza, it will be a breathtaking concours d’elegance and festive party open to the public, at which hundreds of Lamborghinis, collectors and fans from all over the world will gather to celebrate the illustrious history of the brand.

But the festivities don’t stop there. In the United States, “60th Anniversary Giro” is scheduled for this summer. Come September, China will also join in the fun with “Giro China”, running for the 9th consecutive year. Over 100 Lamborghini owners and enthusiasts will gather to round up the celebration with a “60th Anniversary Gala Dinner”.

Back on home soil, Lamborghini Polo Storico, the division responsible for the protection, preservation, and restoration of the brand’s motoring heritage, plans to organise a “60th Anniversary Polo Storico Tour” reserved for Lamborghini classic cars.

In October, the Vallelunga circuit in Rome will play host to the very first Lamborghini Festival, celebrating the brand’s track-oriented cars. This is followed closely by the Grand Finals of the Super Trofeo Lamborghini, which will gather cars from three continents at the Vallelunga circuit.

Lots of events. Lots of thumping engines. Lots of celebrations.
