Volvo's V90 Cross Country Is Here

BY Azfar Hashim

Perfect for the sort who wants something, ahem, not too much of a wagon and not too much of an SUV

Since the introduction of the first Cross Country almost 20 years ago, Volvo Cars has become synonymous with the rugged all-road, all-weather product category, with a growing stable of Cross Country models. This line now continues with the V90 Cross Country variant.

Equipped with All-Wheel Drive, an optimised chassis and an increased ground clearance of 63.5 mm compared to the standard Volvo V90, the All-New Volvo V90 Cross Country improves off-road capability; it can perform in all sorts of road conditions, from muddy tracks to long distance highway driving.

The Volvo V90 Cross Country T5 Momentum, the only variant available for consumers here, is powered by a 254 bhp, 350 Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre power plant. Paired to an 8-speed automatic, it needs only 7.4 seconds to reach 100 km/h from standstill. Also according to Volvo, returns a combined fuel consumption of 7.3L/100 km.

With Volvo Cars’ Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) providing the underpinnings, the all-new Volvo V90 Cross Country has undergone rigorous testing to ensure that it can survive the extremes which it will potentially find itself. And to match to that, part of its image include a panoramic glass roof, lower grille, lower bumper fronts and wheel arch extensions, sill and lower door mouldings, silver front skid plate and a Cross Country logotype embossed in the rear bumper.

The V90 Cross Country also comes with five different drive modes, namely Comfort (default), Dynamic, Eco, Individual and Off Road. The control systems for the engine, automatic gearbox, steering, brake, Electronic Stability Control and Start/Stop function are programmed to give different characteristics in the different modes; the driver display will even change accordingly. The mode is easily changed by an ergonomic roller control on the center console, without having to take the driver’s eyes off the road.

The All-New Volvo V90 Cross Country launches with IntelliSafe Assist as standard. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Distance Alert (active up to 200km/h) and the advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, Pilot Assist. The Pilot Assist functionality gives gentle steering input to keep the car properly aligned within lane markings up to speeds of 130 km/h and no longer needs to follow another car.

Other standard safety equipment exclusive to this car includes Run-off Road Mitigation, Large Animal Detection, City Safety Auto-braking and Extended Road Sign Information.

Price is set at SGD$245,999 including COE.
